** spoiler alert ** Amazing story. Absolutely amazing. I have such a deeper appreciation now for why they are called "The Greatest Generation." Pretty much the entire book, I was on pins and needles and feeling so worried for Louie. I could not believe the descriptions of abuse in Japanese POW camps- I know I would not have had the mental fortitude to survive it. That is, if I somehow managed to survive the plane crash and FORTY THREE DAYS ADRIFT IN A LIFE RAFT WITH NO PROVISIONS!!!!!!!!!!! The entire book, I was just blown away by Louie's life. How he managed to survive. Amazing. I was a little worried toward the end because of the whole alcoholism thing, but of course, Louie managed to pull through and be our hero once again. The one disappointment with the story is that "The Bird" never gets his due. I would have liked to see someone hit him or have him stand trial, but since this is real life and not a novel, I can't blame the author for that. One thing I really liked, and which didn't truly register as "great" until the very end of the book- the author doesn't just drop Louie's raft mate Phil (Allen). Before they crash, Phil is given a short biography, during the days adrift at sea, he is focused on as well, and at the POW camps, the author occasionally touches back to his experience as well, though obviously not to the extent she focuses on Louie. In the Epilogue, Phil is described as being treated as a "footnote" to Louie's story- everyone focuses on Louie's plight, but Phil endured the same. So to have the author treat him as more than a "footnote" was a great part of the book, but something I didn't realize until I read the epilogue. I think everyone should read this book. It should be required reading.
