** spoiler alert ** The book became really enjoyable when Mallory described his journey to India and Tibet. The writing also seemed to get better as Archer uses Mallory's letters to his wife. Why they were so in love is, however, insufficiently told. Perhaps it was her selfless support of the dream that kept him away for months at a time. This is great historical fiction. The description of WWI is heart-wrenching. Just a few years after, national pride was all about a Brit being the first man on Everest. So much so that the expedition committee turned down a very qualified Australian. It was very poignant when Mallory realized that his age was a handicap, and he damned the Germans for taking away some of his best climbing years. He wrote that after the war he'd spend the rest of his days at home. But no, he'd even go with the devil to reach the summit! We learn that his motivation was the natural beauty and awe of the mountain. This book was a startling comparison to current Everest reading such as High crimes: the fate of Everest in an age of greed.

Normally I steer clear of books about TV characters because of their low story quality. This story, however, is a hilarious page-by-page running joke, in which Grover, after reading the title, begs the reader not to turn the pages because he is afraid of meeting the monster. He erects barriers to page-turning which are destroyed as pages are turned, and when the last page is turned he discovers that he is the monster referred to in the title. The humor turns on the fact that the author draws attention to the book context of interaction by having Grover directly address the reader, and by depicting physical objects ostensibly intended to block the pages from turning. Children will tremendously enjoy the feeling of knowing something Grover doesn't know, and will savor the situation comedy of Grover's failed attempts to resist their overwhelming page-turning force. The story ends with a moment of delicious irony in which Grover claims "I told you and told you there was nothing to be afraid of," but then his thought bubble appears: "Oh, I am so embarrassed." [image error] This book does come in a board book format, but by the time a child is ready for this level of humor they will have outgrown board books, so I recommend the paper version.

Hard to rate this book. It's like nothing I've ever read, completely maddening at times -- the pace will physically make you dizzy. But hilarious and the honesty (or sarcasm, you can't tell) is at times jaw-dropping.

I bought and started the book about a two and half weeks ago. I am currently on Part III chapter 11. Being an artist and having a fascination for history and the human mind, I could not help to be drawn to a different point of view about prehistoric cave art. Well Graham Hancock "takes you there" and I really appreciate that he does. This books is not for everyone but the ideas and inquiries are worth it to all. If we do not take a moment in our daily lives to stop, breath, and question what is really going on with us (i.e. as human being) and our relationships to each other and this great life force call earth. Then we will truly be in a desperately frightful state of existence. I invite any courageous, well read, and open minded adult to venture on their own path with the hope of recapturing the wisdom of our ancients. From where I stand, I am grateful to Graham Hancock and David Lewis-Williams for their incredible work in this area. This is my first book by G. Hancock, but I have a feeling not the last.

Love James Frey! I didn't understand alcoholism fully until I read this book.

Powerful, evocative, shocking, stimulating WWII story detailing Bataan death march in 1942 and amazing rescue of 513 surviving Cabanatuan prisoners by Army Rangers in Jan of 1945. Many personal stories of amazing courage and heroism. Hard to justify any personal issues we might be dealing with at the moment after reading about the absolute horror these soliders went through.

A fascinating look at the latest thoughts on sleep, why we spend so much time doing it, what happens when we don't, how much do we need, what to do when we can't, why do we dream, etc etc. Written by one of the UK's foremost sleep researchers, Professor Jim Horne from Loughborough University (my alma mater) writes well for the interested layman, and provides a thoughtful look at both the science and practical aspects to sleep. I was expecting more depth to the science, but was satisfied with the 250 pages exploring a wealth of information about sleep. What still fascinates me is how little we understand about our 8 hours of daily unconsciousness..... So then, are you a lark or an owl, an insomniac or a long sleeper?

I read this mostly because I felt that I should (for historical purposes). I'm glad I did, but I doubt I would have made much a fuss about it if it weren't famous. I can see that it's very unlike most books, and I'm suspect that, if I had really given it more attention, I might have liked it better, but I couldn't take it seriously. I had to skim most of the poetry and stories within the story.
