Probably 3.5. I liked a lot of this book, but I thought the romance was way too subtle. The romantic misunderstandings were never satisfactorily resolved IMO--at least not for the reader to read about. Far too much is left to the reader’s imagination. I like some of that in a story, but in this one I REALLY wanted more explanation on Hale’s part--and some indication that he really wanted more from Kat. Everything is hinted at or happens at some time the reader is not privy to, which is not very satisfying AT ALL!! The “conning” in the book is very fun, though. I loved how they worked it all out and all the planning. Lots of twists and turns and suspense in the story to make it exciting. And, I love the awesome characters! I just didn’t care for the romantic developments (or lack thereof). ***SPOILERS***: There are no grand romantic gestures (or really ANY shows of desire or interest in that way) by Hale--Kat makes all the real moves and we’re never completely sure he’s really into it--FRUSTRATING!! He obviously cares about her, but as more than a buddy? Questionable… I guess there were a few “come away with me” discussions, but they struck me more as an effort to keep Kat from being arrested than to “be together because we love each other.” I found the fill-in-the-blanks aspect of their relationship to be very annoying and unsatisfying. Can’t we have even a tiny peck initiated by Hale?! No fun for Kat to have to push EVERYTHING with him!! Actually, the entire book--romance and all--has a fill-in-the-blanks feel to it, which can be confusing. Sometimes it’s hard to know what’s part of the con and what’s “real.”

** spoiler alert ** Um wow, and not in a good way. I'm not sure I was ever interested in anyone in this book, but the most aggravating part was that the author wrote himself into the most ridiculous corner, which only left the option of a completely ridiculous way out. No worries though, everyone winds up safe, the scary guy gives the good guy a couple of DVD players and the main character has a breakthrough allowing him to fix all of his problems with just one phone call. I'm always more than happy to suspend reality when I'm reading a book, but seriously?

Basically all plot is second to the main characters feelings about every single person she encounters, including hating her baby-daddy. I couldn't stomach her whining; I made it less than 50 pages and passed it up for the stack of better books that are waiting only feet away..

While it can sometimes be difficult to write in an already established fandom franchise, I have to say that I really enjoyed this book. Even though it read more like a crime novel with an international conspiracy and smuggling than an episode of Primeval - in that aspect I feel the book could've been better. However, I did like the way the characters from the show were written, I appreciated the insight I got into the way they were thinking. I even liked the original characters. The author made them likable, although by the end they were more and more threated as if they were just there for convenient disposal.

I was wondering around Wal-Mart waiting for my husband to find what he needed in the automotive section when I came upon this strange book. I had promised myself I would read- it was okay for me to take the time. So, I gathered up two of my daughters, one of thier friends and one of mine and we all started reading. It was fun to know there were others turning the same pages I was turning, reading the same words I was reading. I don't know why, but I felt impowered somehow knowing we would meet, knowing we had a common goal. I loved this book. I loved the characters and the tweaking of the truth to bring it to life as fiction. Alright the plot was a bit predictable in places, but I didn't even care because for a few short hours I had run away with the circus. And I give Sara Gruen a high five for the best ever ending of any book I have ever read. Thank you. The main character reminded me of my own father and my daughter's felt for a moment in time their Papa had came to life in the pages of this book. I know; sappy sweet, but true for us. He was a good and gentle man. My friend read the book and he reminded her of her father. She had a different kind of dad than I did. It took her a few days to pick the book back up. She did call me though as soon as she read those last beautiful words and told me how much she loved the ending. So all in all I say read this book, see if your father or grandfather comes to life within these pages and just for a bit read for the joy of it and forget the critical read. This book is about freedom in many different ways and for me that is what reading is all about-Freedom.
