Heiko Sikka heikosikka — Probably 3.5. I liked a lot of this book, but I thought the romance was way too subtle. The romantic misunderstandings were never satisfactorily resolved IMO--at least not for the reader to read about. Far too much is left to the reader’s imagination. I like some of that in a story, but in this one I REALLY wanted more explanation on Hale’s part--and some indication that he really wanted more from Kat. Everything is hinted at or happens at some time the reader is not privy to, which is not very satisfying AT ALL!! The “conning” in the book is very fun, though. I loved how they worked it all out and all the planning. Lots of twists and turns and suspense in the story to make it exciting. And, I love the awesome characters! I just didn’t care for the romantic developments (or lack thereof). ***SPOILERS***: There are no grand romantic gestures (or really ANY shows of desire or interest in that way) by Hale--Kat makes all the real moves and we’re never completely sure he’s really into it--FRUSTRATING!! He obviously cares about her, but as more than a buddy? Questionable… I guess there were a few “come away with me” discussions, but they struck me more as an effort to keep Kat from being arrested than to “be together because we love each other.” I found the fill-in-the-blanks aspect of their relationship to be very annoying and unsatisfying. Can’t we have even a tiny peck initiated by Hale?! No fun for Kat to have to push EVERYTHING with him!! Actually, the entire book--romance and all--has a fill-in-the-blanks feel to it, which can be confusing. Sometimes it’s hard to know what’s part of the con and what’s “real.”

zesarsaw
Zesar Saw zesarsaw — This book was of interest to me since I've immersed myself for the past few years in novels and biographies of this period. I especially enjoyed the Mitford's and this book was about young people in London Society in the 1920s. However, I didn't enjoy the author's writing style and couldn't help feeling that I was reading a dissertation. Sometimes it seemed a bit dry and scholarly which didn't really fit the subject matter for me somehow. I'm currently reading Vile Bodies by Evelyn Waugh which is referenced throughout this book. And to be fair to this author, this novel reflects an inane and superficial group of young people which may have annoyed Mr. Taylor the same way it irritated me.

promodranjanghosh
Promodranjan Ghosh promodranjanghosh — I think I read this as a teenager in the 90s, but I liked it just as well this time. Seattle, mid-80s. Two leftist printing collectives, one lesbian-run, consider merging, when one shop is vandalized and a male collective member is murdered. Who done it? The alcoholic butch? The hostile dyke softball stars? The Filapina activist? Also, a straight woman gets turned out while slow-dancing to the Supremes in a lesbian bar called Sappho's. Good all around.

jessicacastle
Jessica Castle jessicacastle — Martinez has written one of the best, most humane accounts of illegal immigration from Mexico into the United States. I especially appreciated how this book is laid out. In the first half, he describes his experiences visiting a small provincial Mexican town. The people there are poor, and the economy is almost entirely driven by work performed in the United States. American inner city culture has returned to this small town with migrants, who come back whenever they can. There are tensions there between those who have found success on their voyages north and those who remain very poor. In the second half of the book, Martinez visits many of the families from this small Mexican town at their US residences. He describes the trouble they have finding a place in communities that aren't very welcoming. It is interesting that many families who exist near the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder in the United States are considered wealthy when they return to their communities of origin. In all, this is a fantastic book. It certainly doesn't tell the whole story of migration between Mexico and the United States, but it tells an important part.
