i really liked this book. it was sooo cheesy at times and predictable but that's why i liked it. i really loved the love that blossomed between the main character and the gardener. books have timing too. i think this book just had the perfect timing with me.

Another quick page turner: what if you didn't die but were transported back 25 years to the beginning of your adult life, what would you do with all that knowledge about the future? Jeff Winston places a whole bunch of bets and wins tons of money. Sounds like a start--right? Well, he keeps "replaying" his life, taking different approaches to his lives. Think Groundhog Day mixed with Interview with the Vampire (weird, I know). He even meets another replayer and they fall in love--what? It's kind of romantic.

I've been meaning to read Louis L'Amour's Sacketts series for a LONG time. My reasoning is a bit cloudy. First, I remember liking a movie based on the series that I watched when I was 11 or 12. Perhaps I didn't like it as much as I was pleased I could sit through the entire thing without getting bored and antsy. Second, I'm pretty sure one of my grandfathers had read a few of L'Amour's books, and its my belief anything he found interesting is worth paying attention to. I finally checked out the first book in the series (the first in terms of storyline, not the first in terms of publication date). I knew within the first few chapters that the book is a dog. I also knew I wanted to finish it solely for the satisfaction of documenting how bad it is... I have a sneaking suspicion that L'Amour wrote or dictated a single draft of this book and that neither he or anyone else bothered to edit what he'd written…

This is a great book that argues that where civilizations emerge and where they don't is largely determined by geography. Very convincing and enjoyable.

The main character is a guy who writes comic books about superheroes but the twist is that superheroes really exist and the comic books exist as publicity for the superheroes. He is looking for love but feels that with superheroes around women aren't that attracted to regular girls. Good illustrations. Ok story.

I have read this book a few times. I pick it up from time to time to look over a chapter of this or that - it affected the way I think about other fables and even the movies. I am half convinced that the end of the Wedding Crashers is really about two healthy psyches driving away together into the future, married to themselves. I was rereading this book about the same time I saw that movie. Any woman who is interested in empowering herself will be inspired. It is a jungian read on the darkest version of popular folk tales and fairy tales. for me, that made it very accessible. Some chapters resonated deeply, others not so much - I think it would be different for each individual reader. This is not the easiest book to get into or read, but someone recommended I skip the first three chapters. Once I tried that, I dived right into the book and, reading some chapters, every page turned revealed some piece of knowledge I had been trying to grasp on my own. I read this book at a time of great searching within myself for answers, and if you are at that kind of a point in your life, I would recommend it.

I've heard that Wharton wrote this one as a sort of apology for "The House of Mirth." I'm not entirely sure about that. It seems to simply be a more subtle indictment of high society, although is perhaps more forgiving of the society of Wharton's day rather than that of the late 1800s.

I found the translation annoying, intrusive and dated, especially the use of the english aristocracy as a class reference system. After forty years it's probably time for a new one.
