Read it twice now (re-reading it for my TASOK book club) and my initial impressions still stand. An amazing book- the writing itself, the descriptive style- I would use this in a creative writing class if i was teaching one. Lots has already been said, but having death as the narrator allows the book the freedom to be odd, without detracting at all from the tone and style of the story. Good, good stuff.

This was a light, easy to read story which was perfect for the rush of Christmas when I read it. In fact, I read all four of this series over the Christmas holiday. It was interesting and moved at a fast enough pace, but not too deep. Dominic Cord and his wife, Clarice are sent to the village of Cottisham to take over for an elderly Vicar who has gone on vacation. The villagers are very nice and the young couple fall in love with the place...that is until they find a body in the basement. There are plenty of suspects, most of whom you don't want to see found guilty and several others you would like to be the murder, but it seems as if they couldn't be. The answer is clever and comes after some little bit of danger and a lot of suspense. A great Christmas read!

Ehrenreich did a complete and accurate job researching for this book, but her choice to experience life as a low-wage worker seems almost cruel to me. If work is so hard to come by for the bottom 20% of workers, then she should not have taken the jobs that other people needed to have a shot at getting by in America. Yes, she learned important information from her experience, but Ehrenreich could have learned the same or similar statistics through interviews instead. That way she would not have been taking work that someone else needed. Although I do not entirely agree with the author's choices, I do believe that putting herself in poverty did help her with her book. She was able to give a first-hand account of the horrors of being poor as opposed to biased stories from actual poverty-stricken workers in America. Nickel and Dimed captured my attention because I knew the stories in it were real and first-hand.

Dalam buku ini, bukan cuma manusia saja yg semakin modern, para peri juga ikut berevolusi. Kini tak hanya sayap peri yg sudah tidak ada, namun hak untuk tinggal di permukaan tanah pun sudah lenyap, tersudut hingga pusat bumi oleh ledakan populasi manusia dan kecanggihan teknologi manusia. Dan berkat bantuan salah satu Centaurus sebagai Doraemon mereka, kecanggihan teknologi ikut diperkenalkan pada para peri, kurcaci, goblin, dkk. Itulah yg menarik dalam kisah ini, haha. Aku praktis ngakak terus melihat peri berperan sebagai polisi bersenjatakan pistol sambil menaiki pesawat ulang-alik ke permukaan bumi, atau sebagai akuntan yg membahas saham melalui handphone, atau sebagai psikolog yg tampil di acara talk show. Tak hanya itu, centaur si manusia kuda yg terkenal dgn keangkuhannya itu sekarang harus menundukkan kepala di hadapan peri atasannya supaya gajinya tdk dipotong, hahaha. Walaupun ketergantungan mereka terhadap teknologi sudah jelas separah manusia, sihir dalam nadi para peri ini tak sepenuhnya menghilang. Hanya saja setiap kali sihir mereka habis (yg kebanyakan digunakan sebagai perisai/glamour untuk membuat mereka tak kasat mata di hadapan manusia atau sihir lain untuk membereskan kekacauan di dunia manusia yg ditimbulkan para troll), sihir mereka harus diisi ulang melalui ritual tertentu di permukaan bumi. Dan di tempat ritual itulah terjadinya pertemuan yg ditakdirkan oleh Eoin Colfer untuk opsir Holly Short dengan seorang penjahat jenius berusia 12 tahun, Artemis Fowl. Menawan peri bukanlah pekerjaan mudah jika melihat betapa suksesnya para peri menyembunyikan keberadaan mereka dari manusia dengan paduan sihir dan teknologi yg canggih. Namun sepertinya tak ada yg mustahil bagi Artemis Fowl yg jenius dan licik. Dengan mengandalkan pengetahuan peri yg diperolehnya dari buku panduan para peri milik Sprite yg terbuang dari kaumnya, ia berhasil menangkap Holly saat leprechaun wanita itu sedang mengisi baterai sihirnya di salah satu tempat ritual. Seperti penculik biasa lainnya, Artemis meminta tebusan emas pada para peri. Bukannya Artemis ini miskin, ia sangat kaya... Tapi ia butuh emas dalam jumlah yg sanggup menempatkan keluarga Fowl kembali ke posisi teratas di daftar urutan para milyader dunia. Tentu saja para peri tak sudi memenuhi permintaan Artemis. Maka dimulailah perang teknologi antara Artemis dan para peri, yg juga melibatkan troll dan sihir di dalamnya. Siapakah yg menang pada akhirnya? Lalu, tampaknya tdk cuma emas saja yg diinginkan Artemis dari para peri, apakah itu? Aku suka dgn gaya penulisannya pengarang yg satu ini. Gaya berceritanya enak, sarat dgn humor dan alur ceritanya juga cepat dan tak tertebak. Bertolak belakang dgn gaya penulisannya beberapa novelis yg juga mengangkat tema peri yg kebanyakan agak membosankan, bertele-tele, lambat alurnya dan kurang orisinal. Memang masih banyak buku bertema peri yg belum pernah kubaca dan yg akan kubaca suatu saat, tapi untuk saat ini, Artemis Fowl adalah buku bertema peri favoritku dari semua buku tentang peri yg pernah kubaca.

2.5 stars. It was not something I would pay to read, but since it was free at the time, I decided to give it chance. However, subject matter, twincest, would not be to everyone's taste. Jaye Valentine was not an author I had read before, but I would pay for another work by them - depending on the subject, of course.

I could not get excited about this. Too bad, because I love when Preston and Child write together. But this true crime book just made me think that the Italian police are idiots. Didn't get past chapter two and I rarely give up on books. Bad choice!
