This is only the second book I've read by Hemmingway. I'm amazed at the way he blends Spanish with English. There were several parts of this book that gave me chills. There is a rather weird love story that doesn't really work... but I hear that Hemmingway has issues with that stuff. I have heard that he was very sexist, but in this book I don't see that. Pilar is one of the strongest, most fascinating characters in any book I have read.

Typical Irving, disturbed, seriously disturbed childhoods, crazy parents, adults trying to understand their childhood (no bears, though!), alternative sex (lots of it), and Vienna. You'll like it if you like John Irving, find it weird if you don't and find it absolutely disgusting unless you're fairly non-judgemental!

Of the books I have read since graduating from college, this is definitely one of my favorites, and it all thanks to my wonderful husband who got this beautiful hardcover first edition for me at a used book store. It took me a while to shake off the general sense that any fiction written less than 40 years ago isn't worth reading. But after I decided not to do graduate studies in English, I gave myself permission to start reading things just for fun (Confessions of a Shop-a-holic, The Devil Wears Prada, Good in Bed, etc.). Although most of it has been akin to watching a rather silly (but still enjoyable) romantic comedy, Memoirs was different. It's a beautiful story, and it was beautifully written. I enjoyed it as much as any of the canon works I have loved. And I'm not ashamed to say it!
