pac_man_18
Pac Man pac_man_18 — This is one of the best collections of short stories I have ever read. I am the kind of person that doesn't like short stories because they leave you in a terrible and incomplete state after you have read them. But these stories, while far from leaving you in complete state, make you think and actually give you a snippet of a bigger story that you can imagine for yourself.

Nikola Bibic nikolabibicdesign — "You spend your whole life stuck in the labyrinth, thinking about how you'll escape it one day, and how awesome it will be, and imagining that future keeps you going, but you never do it. You just use the future to escape the present." Miles "Pudge" Halter started boarding school friendless, aimless and naive. It didn't take long for his roommate (nicknamed "The Colonel") to influence him to do all the bad things Miles' parents hoped he would avoid doing, including smoking, drinking and other unhealthy deeds. As if his life wasn't starting to get troublesome enough, along comes Alaska, who Miles thinks is "the hottest girl in all of human history." Alaska may be good-looking but she's also into a lot of no-good. Oh, and she has a boyfriend! But Miles likes who Miles likes, and his crush on Alaska leads him on a journey full of bad decisions, big emotions and even bigger questions. Miles, Colonel, Alaska and their other high school friends know how to have fun. They sneak off campus whenever they want. They pull legendary class pranks. They break all the rules and know exactly how far to take them without getting caught. Well, almost. So life is grand until the unthinkable happens. One of them is killed in a car crash. At first, it appears to be a simple but devastating drunk driving accident. But as an internal investigation slowly reveals, there was a lot more to the tragedy than alcohol. Looking for Alaska contains some very mature content and themes. For that reason, I would recommend this book for high school readers and above. Maturity-levels aside, it takes a smart reader to keep up with John Green's witty, sarcastic and intelligent writing. When followed closely, readers will likely laugh more per page than the average novel. Funny moments are balanced with sad events. Religious and philosophical themes run deeper than one would expect for a young adult novel, but are thought-provoking and important nonetheless. If you're a smart reader looking for a smart story that entertains, challenges your mind and even questions life as you know it, then you'll enjoy reading Looking for Alaska. (223 pages)
