I was planning to give this one three stars, but the more I thought about it...it isn't even that good. Perhaps the best part was the demonic chicken (I kid you not); it was pretty much downhill from there. There was a lot of focus on new characters, particularly one who was neither very likable nor very interesting. There was a great deal of information about the culture of Anderith, which seemed to be there primarily as a vehicle for the author to make political commentary (granted, the whole series exists primarily as a vehicle for the author to make political commentary, but most of it is better disguised). I like political fiction (and social commentary) better than most, but in this case it seemed a bit contrived. On the plus side, there were a few surprises in the plot, which wasn't as predictable as it appeared. Overall, I was glad to be done with this one.

I wanted this to be better than it was. Probably should have been shorter. I mean, I love Sassy, Jane and the rest but you can only congratulate yourself for so many pages before it just gets obnoxious. That said, anyone who related to Sassy will love their own personal trip down memory lane that this book inevitably induces.

Read this last year during the midst of my The Runaways/Joan Jett obsession.

I loved the characters and the story-telling. This novel was extremely sad (especially because it represented the real lives of actual Afghanis), and it opened my eyes to the way that people (and especially women) in the Middle East live. Some parts of the book were heartwrenching and too horrible to believe -- but the author lived in Afghanistan and based his book on reality. This novel taught me about Afghani women and made me feel sympathy and compassion for them.

Not sure how excited I am for Book 6. Was hoping some of these storylines would start wrapping up. Can't stand the killing of good characters...

Good drama. Perfect continuation despite a bit too much recap.

A spiritual journey that Elizabeth Gilbert goes on is both poignant and witty. Elizabeth's memoir is candid, funny and allowed me to reflect on my own life. She's great: "the Yogic path is about disentangling the built-in glitches of the human condition, which I'm going to over-simply define here as the heartbreaking inability to sustain contentment." I definitely was able to resonate with her anecdotes and feelings about finding something to really be content with. All in all, a great read.

I found the book to be both fascinating and a tad boring; I really wanted to love the book for its overall framing, the Jewish scriptures as biography of God and not merely a holy hand-off of words and rules. In his conception God evolves, becomes. Definitely worth reading.

Okay -- so most people are not going to relate at all to Didion's lifestyle (staying at the Beverly Wilshire, flying on the Concorde, and so on); I sure as heck didn't. But when I ignored those parts that distanced me (which aren't what the book is about, anyway), I connected completely: hyperanalyzing events (and the many ways they could have occurred differently), hoarding items that no longer have any function (the broken alarm clock), obsessively cataloging time spent together, etc. Didion completely manages to avoid the pitfall of being overly sentimental despite the subject.

This book articulated a number of things I have often thought about. Its tone and arguments are uncompromising. It's an interesting snapshot of British society in the early 21st century and challenges a number of received notions on such topics as the efficacy of brandishing "Not in my name" banners at anti-war marches, minute's silences and the wearing of empathy ribbons to show solidarity for . The book makes for uncomfortable reading regarding the way in which people choose to show how much they care and why they care.
