Not an earth-shaking book, but lots of fun. The heroine, Gillian McCormick, is a makeup artist in Hollywood. Just as she was leaving the set after hours, she witnesses the murder of the leading man—and the murderer is the son-in-law of a well-known mobster. Her best friend Cora, a long-retired actress, suggests that Gillian accompany her on a cruise aimed at single geeks. Gillian agrees, and the two of them remake Gillian's wardrobe from the sexy clothes in Cora's closet. Cora calls on her young friend Lex Manchester to act as Gillian's guard, who reluctantly agrees to play a nerd for the cruise even though he has worked hard to get rid of the nerdy reputation he had back in high school. All should be well, except Gillian and Lex wind up trying to ignore the growing attraction to each other. And then they discover that the cruise is full of nerds hoping to get lucky—with a mobster and a cross-dressing sociopath to boot.

This book is not like a prescription for antibiotics, where you get the pills, take them, and get better. It's more like a prescription for physical therapy, where you go to an appointment, the therapist does some work on you, some of it painful, and then you go home and have exercises you must do yourself. It's not a book to read cover-to-cover in a few sittings. It's more like a workbook. Read a section or a chapter, reflect on it, answer the questions, talk about it with your support system. Some of it is obvious. You're tired? Get more sleep, relax more, don't over-commit. But there are ideas of what to do to relax, what you might need to change to get more sleep, how you can keep yourself from over-committing. If you've been working on this at all, then there might not be anything new in this book for you. But if you're just about to embark on self-renewal, then this book might be just the guide you need.

Fairly decent kid-entertainment, fun read. Was initially confused by Hunger Math/Geography (wait, how do people from the same district even manage to know other in a North America divided by 13; but apparently, I'd missed the massive depopulation (and presumably gathering-up of stragglers) in the universe setting). I feel faintly ridiculous saying this, but between this and Melvin Burgess, I always find myself umimpressed in general with dark themes in young adult novels. I mean, it's the sort of thing I always think is a good idea yet somehow is always a bit of a letdown. It's a bit silly, of course (because the whole point is that the target audience are not adults); but I always come away thinking “oh come on; they can handle more than that”. One silly question: do they really talk about trousers and kilos in that book, or did I just read a UK port?

I admit to an obsession with teenage/tween fiction. I thought this book was well written and that Derting has created a well-rounded character in Violet. Unlike Katniss in the Hunger Games series or Cassia in Matched, Violet was not written as so self involved so it was easier for me to like her character (granted, I am an "mature" woman so I shouldn't really be judging the self-involvement of fictional teen characters should I?!).
