David Thomson jandavid — This is the book that made me want to join the Peace Corps. I didn't. Regardless, with Iraq on our minds for obvious reasons this book is all the more poignant.

Yuhan Lin joseyuhan — Campbell makes a strong and provocative case for Jung's collective unconscious in his analysis of world mythology. Through his lucid explication, I came to understand how myth can function as as a narrative for societal construction.

Hugo Arco _ — I really would probably give this a 3.5 star rating, were it possible; I did very much enjoy it. It resonated even more at the end when I read the authors note detailing that the events in the book, though dramatized, were actual events as well as the characters, primarily the criminals, are historically acurate. (Huge mental humm). I felt the main characters were easy to assimilate, and the plot, once I caught on to the complexity, held my imagination to the end. It is suspenceful and really, until the final chapters, I was still guessing at the scheme and it's loose ends, which the author ties together very nicely. My complaints are two: 1. The main character is an ex-pugilist and very prone to discussions with his fists over his mouth---which is many times to his detriment, however, to read about his violent outbursts and such is a little too unsettling for my total enjoyment. Due to this previous lifestyle, his aquaintances are also of a ruffian/loose moral crowd...not my favorite to read about for too long. AND.... 2. The first perhaps 100 pages is devoted to a subplot which is perfectly essential to the final outcome but which is of a semi-sordid nature and not terribly appealing. I considered putting the book away but then, I was reeled back in soon enough.
