In this book's predecessor, My Name is Asher Lev, there is much struggle in Asher's mind between following his strict religion & community or breaking away and painting what he sees in the world, even if goes against his religion. In The Gift of Asher Lev there is only a little of this struggle. The main struggle is with his family--where should they live? What will become of the children? What will his father do when the Rebbe dies? What does his wife really want? A lot of the text is Asher's own inner world, as it is written in first person, and contains many minute details that I could have done without. The plot itself moves very slowly. I do enjoy learning about the Ladover Jewish community though, which Potok describes very well. Might not be worth the time it takes to get through this book unless you don't mind first person musings and/or learning about Hasidic Judaism.

This is not a feel-good story, but it is compelling and reveals much about the world at the time.

This novel took me by surprise. I loved every word, plus all the amazing artwork. I was a bit sick of contemporary books, and Wanderlove easily rekindled my love for them. Truly a fabulous book, and one I'll definitely be buying when it releases. ***Update*** Sometimes you have to lose yourself in order to discover who you are and exactly what you're capable of. For Bria Sandoval, she hopes to find the newer, better version of herself in Central America. Only, her original plans go astray when she decides to follow Starling and Rowan through the more interesting (and so not in a tour brochure) parts of Central America. Along the way, Bria finds that there's more to discover than she originally realized.... I liked Kirsten Hubbard's debut, Like Mandarin, and I expected something similar for her sophomore novel...and it blew me away. Like petals from a dandelion floating in the wind, I was simply along for the ride when reading this lively story. Wanderlove is the story Hubbard was meant to write, and it's easy to see that she put heart and soul into this story. The narrator, Bria, is likable from the start, with a good attitude and sense of humor. Her growth throughout her journeys only adds to her likability. The locations are wonderfully depicted, and my imagination ran wild with them (and made me wish I was a traveler). Simply put, Wanderlove has easily become one of my favorite novels. Highlights: The artwork gives Bria and Wanderlove more depth and uniqueness1. Every aspect rings true - every single character, each relationship, each exotic location, and even the overall story itself. Rowan and Starling revealed themselves to be more layered than I originally gave them credit for. An inspiring story, lovely writing, endearing characters - everything is a highlight in Wanderlove. Lowlights: Predictable moments? Nearly every contemporary novel has predictable moments, so I can't fault this story for that. Review originally posted on YA Book Queen

Kind of funny how much he hates Kim Il Sung yet has to give him props.

Formally innovative and still highly affecting, Markson's recent book is nothing more than two boxes of notes for a novel, with infrequent interjections by "Author" about how to go forward with these notes, and, increasingly, about his own deteriorating health. Thousands of facts about esoteric thinkers' and artists' lives scroll by—"Frozen music, Shilling called architecture," is representative—the accumulated tidbits of years of reading. This then becomes a substitute for traditional content, allowing Markson to fill a novel with nothing of what you might call "weight." But of course it's more complicated than that, as what constitutes the notes turns moribund, reflecting indirectly the protagonist's thoughts. This is no different than traditional first-person narratives, where diction can be read to infer psychological states in addition to all the usual signifiers. Markson has brilliantly taken the most dry, decontextualized content you could imagine and imbued it with all the pathos of a traditional novel. Beckett comes to mind, having sheared away at language and form in similar ways (and in that one of his novels is also a dying man's last thoughts). If the goal of the novelist is to ultimately convey humanity in truer and truer ways, Markson has done so more than any other contemporary novel I can think of.

A good read-by-the-pool book for summer. A lucky library find.

This is the book that Dan Brown wanted to write. It's a total brain tweaker. Make sure you keep a dictionary handy.

Probably the most entertaining business book out there.

I would never normally pick up a sci-fi book, but this one is great!

believe the hype - this is an incredible revisiting of the Cinderella story. a girl i was babysitting for was reading it and got me completely hooked. yes i did used to babysit. i like some kids. if injustice makes you angry, be sure to have soothing tea on hand when you read this - it's full of unfairness.
