Another PD James book that probes the darkness of the human soul, only this one set in 2027. She takes the same highbrow intelligence she applies to the mystery genre and applies it to sci fi. As with any James, it is dark, dark, dark, mitigated somehow by sentences that unfold like flowers. It seems to have little relationship with the movie--as with her mysteries it becomes a character study with characters in extremis--except this time the "extremis" is the extinction of the entire race. Wonderful.

You will probably figure the ending out without too much trouble - but the getting there will give the ride of a lifetime. I can't tell you how many times I put this book down and immediately picked it back up again, saying that I would read just one more chapter. Laurel Shields wakes up one morning and takes a home pregnancy test and finds she is pregnant, but there is a strong possibility that the father is not her husband, Dr. Warren Shields. The father could possibly be, Danny McDavitt, who is unhappily married and the father of a challenged boy. Dr. Warren has a practice with fellow doctor, Kyle Auster, who has been cheating Medicare with the help of his office manager, Vida Roberts. The FBI is auditing their books and Kyle and Vida plant damaging information on Dr. Warren trying to make him the fall guy. Dr. Warren, who has a problem of his own, turns from being mild mannered and a caring person to one who is mistrusting and volatile. He is tipped off to the planted information and in searching for it; he finds a love letter written to his wife. He now holds his wife and children hostage as he tries to find out who her lover is. The action is racheted up a notch when Dr. Warren's house is surrounded by sheriff deputies that are short on handling hostage situations. They are faced with trying to resolve the situation before nightfall and how to subdue Warren without endangering his wife and children. The action takes place in one day and I cannot remember a book that packed so much intensity in such a small time frame. You will find yourself racing from page to page trying to find out what is going to happen next.

Set in the 1300's. Gytha is betrothed to the handsome William, but when he unexpectedly dies shortly before their wedding, she has to marry Thayer, the next heir to the estate. Thayer had a heartbreak in the past and is dismayed at the thought of marrying a beauty like Gytha who will definitely cheat on him. Although he's a very well-respected warrior, he is deeply insecure about his looks and Gytha's feelings for him and his distrust threatens to permanently damage their relationship, despite Gytha's devotion to him. Because of the time period, the dialogue and prose were a little formal (eg no modern slang), but it wasn't overdone so it didn't slow down the reading or make it tedious. The characters were all pretty well-developed and believable. As dutiful as Gytha is to Thayer, you never get the irksome feeling that she's being subjected. This isn't going to become a favorite of mine, but it was a fun little read and it's definitely a keeper.

Read and then watched the movie and was still disappointed with the ending, however very much enjoyed the background history during the 40's decade.

As a former flight attendant, I found this a really enjoyable, fascinating read. Prudence Black goes beyond the mere details of the changing uniforms of Qantas since the 40's. She explores the growth of the Qantas empire and how it reflects the changing social and culutral environment of both Australia and the world. As I discovered, the first flight attendant was a trained nurse hired on an American airline to make women feel more comfortable during flight. From here Black details the evolution of the flight attendant from a predominantly male industry to become the most aspired to career for young, unmarried women in the 50's and 60's as it enabled women to travel and enjoy an amount of independence (and perhaps also throw them in the paths of wealthy businessmen). Then with the rise of the feminist movement, there was an outbreak of reversed discrimination where women were selected for roles over men. Black continues this theme through the decades until 9/11 and explores how the increased security measures and economic downturn once again has changed the roles of the flight attendant. The Flight Attendant's Shoe demonstrate how social context has shaped the changing uniforms of Qantas flight attendants over time until we come to the modern Morrissey Indigenous inspired uniform and how it compares to the uniforms of many other international airlines. The book includes plenty of photos and sketches of the uniforms and also many of the promotional material as well as input from Qantas flight attendants to emphasise her point. My only complaint is that I was very aware that neither of the two references to Qantas' main Australian competition - Virgin Australia - were not complimentary.

This book shows a typical kid acting up which many children can relate. I think David just want to test his mom to see if she still loves him after all the bad things that he has done.Teachers can use this book to discuss acceptable behaviors and unacceptable behaviors. I definitely think that behavior should be discuss before or after reading. Children should not think that it is okay to do these things.
