FROGS!

A very interesting story centering around the fourth and fifth of Henry VIII's wives. It is fiction, but many of the details are historically accurate. I thought it was fascinating to peek into the minds of these women, who were married (however briefly) to one of the most hateful men on the planet.

Maybe I misread the original review of this book but I was disappointed that it didn't focus more on cooking than Julie's "adventures and mishaps" in the kitchen...and her life. A plane book, if that.

Other than the occasional book recommended by Oprah's Book Cult, I realize that most books with "that" sticker are not for me.

** spoiler alert ** This was one of those books I wanted to like a lot more than I did. But the protagonist vacillates between being "broken" and just being nuts, the plot lurches from location to location and utter reversal to utter reversal, and plot elements and characters come out of left field and then vanish into right field again. Sirantha Jax is a jumper, one of the rare genetic talents that helps guide spacecraft through hyperspace, an employee of the Corp. She's also in a mental ward, when we open, recovering from a horrific crash she cannot remember but for which she's feeling great guilt. When a mysterious band of rebels break her out, will she learn the truth about the Corp? Will she lay her ghosts to rest? Will she discover she's a pawn in a great galaxy-spanning game? Will she fall madly in redemptive (and swexy) love with the grim and gritty mercenary? Will we care by the end? You can write a book where the protagonist (and reader) are never quite sure where the next hit is coming from, or who's lying, or when something new (and bad) will happen. And you can write a book that's gritty and psychological, or you can write a book that's swexy and romantic. And you can write a book that's focused on human space, and then turn around and introduce a plethora of deus-ex-aliens at the end. And you can write a book about the dangers and powers of a mysteriously sinister corporate organization that then turns out to be a paper tiger. And you can write a book where everything that happens goes from bad to worse, dragging the hero repeatedly into the depths, until the end wraps up everything in a nice, neat, happy little bow. But you probably shouldn't try to do all those things. And if you do, you should probably make it clear to the reader that you, as the writer, are in control, and not simply hopping from incident to incident because that's what came to mind next to bump up the conflict level. There's some great raw material here. The various elements I mention above are, individually, mostly handled pretty well. It's just put together really, really awkwardly, which made it difficult to enjoy. Hyperspace and the glories thereof to a jumper are initially a huge focus; later it's mere backdrop, hardly worth mentioning except as part of some sort of possible conspiracy that later turns out not to have anything to do with the resolution of the tale. Relationships come, go, change, evolve, devolve, do 180s ... and it's never clear why (real life is chaotic -- literary life may appear chaotic but should have some meta-direction). The protagonist has something of an arc, but it's more self-described than readily apparent. And while the individual glimpses of the galaxy are each done well, they make little coherent sense as a whole. This is the first novel by Aguirre, and it shows promise. I don't feel like I wasted the hours it took me to read, by any means (even at today's paperback prices). But I also don't feel a need to read the book again, nor to pick up any hypothetical sequel; I'll wait for Aguirre to write about someone other than Sirantha Jax.

This is a constructive approach to winning and keeping customers by learning to ask the right questions that lead towards a win win solution for both parties. The cycle that he proscribes takes into account the difficulty of selling solutions in tough markets, which includes an increase in competition. In our current environment I have learned the importance of understanding what Bosworth calls situational fluency, or a consultative salespersons framework to offering a solution. Superior sellers are able to align a selling methodology with the buyers level of need and progress through a buy cycle. Key areas to learn from the buyer include their situation, or how they operate and all that goes into their decision making. I learned it is impossible to know every aspect of a buyers condition along with all aspects of your product, service, or capability to match effectively. The right questions lead to a better understanding and a follow-on solution. The other high level need for superior sellers is intuitive relationship building skills, along with excellent listening skills that help to establish sincerity and trust. The ideal selling situation is to establish trust and confidence through good questions, uncover problems and offer a well thought out solution. There are other areas that are helpful in the book such as establishing a selling framework document, cold calling communication, and other appropriate communication techniques with a prospect or client.

This book is similar to the James Herriot stories. A young doctor comes to work with an older man.

Pleasantly spooky, with a nice selection of stories and Goreys.
