It would have been better had I not seen Children of Men.

I wanted to give this 4.5 stars, but I rounded up! I LOVED this book! A great story of hope, love and compassion. It was intriguing, compelling- all with some romance thrown in. A story of an Olympic Runner who became a gunner for the United States in WWII and was P.O.W. in Japan for over 3 years. I cried. I rejoiced. I loved it!

Eh - this was okay. There were some rolling of eye moments but it was a cute concept. I have to say, the necklaces reminded me of the BFF necklaces. Those were so popular in the 80s. I bought one with my BFF and then she moved away several years later. When we finally met again, we were night and day. Turns out, she thinks sex is a bad thing as is any type of make up. I wonder what she'd think of me now. O_o I digress.

Mary Gaitskill is one of my favorite authors. Her stories and novels are frightening, dark, and revealing. Her characters are often cruel, scared, ugly, and in pain. But they also seem familiar somehow, and sympathetic even when they should be unlikeable. Gaitskill's "girls" in this novel are developed through vignettes about their childhoods interspersed with present interactions between themselves and with others. I love this book especially for its satire of Ayn Rand (Anna Granite) and Objectivism (Definitism); Justine, a Manhattan journalist, and Dorothy, a former follower of Definitism, meet when Justine begins working on a research article on the movement. Like other Gaitskill characters, the tenuous relationship between Justine and Dorothy, both of whom seem to clearly self-identify as straight, has queer overtones. One review states that this book shows, once again, "how family fucks you up." Beyond that, I think this book is about how adults (from fucked up families or not) can become so isolated and the ways that they try to compensate for scarce emotional connections.

Christianity and religion how do the two differ or are they the same? If a bottle of orange was labelled incorrectly, is it still orange in it? C.S. Lewis looks at things from fresh perspective and does not go into tunnel vision by simply accepting everything at face value, pondering deeply and considering alternatives he gives valid arguments and shows evidences and logical reasoning on what it means to be a Christian. Surely being a Pastor does not necessarily equate to being a spiritual man since the only two obstacles to that role is simply a certain amount of intellect and an ability to speak to a large congragation. Anyone with these two traits can succeed in this chosen career/job/calling. Diver's weights and heartfelt intentions, surely they are not the same?
