There were some beautiful images here, but not a terrible lot of surprise. The sections each had an overriding theme or two (My Dog Died; I Am Aging) and only a few of the poems got more than a tiny bit inside my brain: Another Visit to the Oracle, String Tail, and The Door were most effective. It's nice that there's a CD of Atwood reading a few dozen of the poems, but not nice that she sounds bored.

Just a lovely book about growing up, the loss of the security of childhood, friendship and family. Elise lives with her Aunt and Uncle, an orphan at 3 when her father dies (her mother died in childbirth). She is surrounded by loving adults and a friend who loves her and who she loves with no bounds. All this changes when they start middle school, the transition from fifth grade to sixth, much rougher than anyone would think. Bullies, being ashamed of friends, not knowing who she wants to be, Elise hates going to school. Surely, everything will change when she turns 12. But the day after 11 feels just like the day before, with one change: the first of 8 keys appear that will open the eight locked doors in the barn that may help her become the person she is meant to be. I absolutely loved this book- the feeling of shame when Elise turns against her friend, the despair of meeting her nemesis every morning at their locker, the teasing and bullying no one else seems to see or hear- it all rings so true. Elise needs to find her way and the love of the people around her help to form the path she will travel. It's also funny and light in a number of places and adults reading it will remember all too well the joy of playing in leaves and chasing each other with swords made out of branches. Kids may find a character that will help them find options to the horrors encountered in a middle school hallway.

In order to save their race after their planet was attacked, 10 kids and 10 guardians fled to Earth. These 10 kids are number and must survive while being hunted. They can only be killed in numerical order. 1, 2, and 3 are dead. The books follow the story of number four. Slowly, number four gains his special powers. Wielding these powers can help him save his race and planet. But will a love interest come on the way? I love this book. The style of writing really appeals to me. The story is very fast paced and intriguing. You are learning about this planet as the main character is also learning about it. It’s very first hand. I would recommend this book to boy especially. It is an easy, enjoyable and fast read. A disclaimer, there are a few cuss words throughout the book.

A story of political machinations complicated by demon possession, ancient conflicts and long lost heirs. This is a good solid fantasy story. The characters come to life with a verity of concerns and desires that seem totally reasonable for people with their back stories. Violette keeps the pace moving and the reader guessing as villains become victims and heroes stumble. The skill set of the lead characters is impressive and reminiscent of actual warrior casts from the history of our world. The weapons play is nicely handled. One man with a sword can hold a narrow passage against hundreds. No man with a sword can defeat five swordsmen at once in an open field. It was nice to see this reasoning applied as it is so often neglected in fantasy books. It is a game of kings and king makers and want to be kings as well as the drive to ‘be not’ that can invade us all. In short a very enjoyable read.

This novel offers a really interesting and innovative SF concept: in the future, every person is incorporated upon birth. Twenty percent of the shares go to the parents, five percent goes to the government, the rest can be sold by the owner for education, possessions and so on. You can buy and sell someone's shares as an investment, for charity, even as a hostile act. Reaching "self-majority" - owning the majority of your own shares - is similar to becoming independently wealthy in today's world. The entire future society is based on this basic economic concept. I thought it was a fantastic idea and was really excited about the novel. Unfortunately the brothers Kollin ruined this inventive idea with some really poor writing and plotting. It's a classic example of great concept, poor execution. At the start of the novel, the cryogenically frozen body of Justin Cord, a 21st century billionaire is found and revived. Justin becomes something completely unique: an unincorporated man. The early part of the novel describes Justin's exploration of the brand new world he finds himself in: new societal values, new economy, new morals, new technology. This is probably the best part of the novel. However, after this relatively entertaining start, the novel takes a turn for the worse. Part of the problem lies with the authors' writing skills. Dialogues veer from paragraph-long lectures to feeble and sometimes crude attempts at humor. Most characters are cardboard-thin. The plot has a childlike simplicity complete with forbidden love interest and evil mastermind. In addition, parts of the book read like a libertarian manifesto. Whether you subscribe to that ideology or not, its representation here is extreme and, frankly, crude - e.g. the word "taxes" is practically a curse, and you'll find things like "can you believe governments were allowed to manage currencies in the past?". I found it truly depressing that such a great concept could be so badly handled. To make matters even worse, the novel completely falls apart in the last 100 pages or so, throwing a huge new concept in the mix completely out of the blue and then leading to a resolution that wouldn't be out of place in a B movie or a comic book. I don't want to go into detail to avoid spoilers - all I can say is that I was literally shaking my head in astonishment. Before reading the end of the novel, I was ready to give this book two stars, simply because the concept of personal incorporation is so fresh and new. However, the conclusion is so botched that I have to rate this one star.

Thoroughly confused by this book, however, it was quite entertaining.

Read for Kenton Library Book Club, March 2011. I loved this book. I have recommended it to several people and my description (A French concierge! Who is an intellectual! But hides it from people! And a very smart twelve year old girl! Who has decided that life is silly and that she will kill herself! It also has a lot of philosophy! It's very awesome!) tends to give people that "sounds horrible, what is she thinking?" look in their eyes. So my description won't do it justice. But the book is very funny and I identified with both the characters throughout the book, and the book club was in agreement about this. Though some in my book club weren't the raving fan I was, many enjoyed the novel more than most. A quick glance at Goodread reviews shows a number one star designations, so you might not like it. But I'm not interested in intellectual pursuits, philosophy or suicidal girls and I greatly loved this book. Or at least 19/20 of it as I was not at all thrilled by the ending.

Maybe I would give this one a 3.5. It took me, literally, the entire book to decide whether I really liked it or not because I had a bit of a problem with the concept. I am SO happy that she chose to end it the way that she did otherwise it would have scored lower simply because it annoyed me (yes I am totally like that)! Aside from the story itself, I love her writing and I thought the banter between characters was fun.

This book is frustratingly confusing. My best advice is to find a timeline for it. I know they exist because I used one to help me. It can take away from some of the intended confusion so I might suggest reading some of the book without it to get a feel for what it is supposed to read like and then going back and using the timeline. Each paragraph takes place in a different time and location which is why it seems choppy and confusing. Also, much of it is narrated by the mentally challenged son. However the timeline can help you make sense of the actually story and plot.
