Is it just me, or are we starting to develop a surfeit of spunky, young paranormal-based heroines working at coming to grips with their newly developed and/or developing powers while trying to fire up (or maybe cool off) a relationship with the hottest guy in the plot? Just asking. I mean, I can't seem to put my hand down on the New Releases table in a bookstore without touching another one. Having gotten that off my chest for at least this moment, I'm now in the position of admitting that Christina Henry's "Black Wings" had more to offer than a lot of them. Wait! I feel another tangent coming on! Christina Henry? REALLY? The copyright holder's first name is Tina, and in the dedication she thanks Chris and Henry for making everything worthwhile. You don't suppose.....? No. Just a coincidence, I'm sure. Anyway, back to the review! [Insert a plot synopsis here. I don't plan to, so there's plenty of room.] Madeline Black is the heroine of this first book in a new series. The book has all of the usual ingredients for a new series, including a decent world, a good cast of supporting characters (even if Ms. Henry bumps off an interesting one right at the beginning of the story), a quirky mascot, and an original hook in the romance department. Seems that she and the love interest have a really nasty barrier keeping them 'apart' - - one that's good enough that they never really get further than light kissing and heavy breathing. The plot moved along well, and avoided the trap of getting too terrily hung up in its own mythology. There were even some surprises thrown in at the very end to keep you interested enough to return for book #2. In my case, the surprises were wasted. I was already planning on waiting for another book just for the aforementioned quirky mascot, a cranky, popcorn-munching little gargoyle named Beezle. All in all, a fun time.
