gostafnorista
Gostaf Norista gostafnorista — Is it just me, or are we starting to develop a surfeit of spunky, young paranormal-based heroines working at coming to grips with their newly developed and/or developing powers while trying to fire up (or maybe cool off) a relationship with the hottest guy in the plot? Just asking. I mean, I can't seem to put my hand down on the New Releases table in a bookstore without touching another one. Having gotten that off my chest for at least this moment, I'm now in the position of admitting that Christina Henry's "Black Wings" had more to offer than a lot of them. Wait! I feel another tangent coming on! Christina Henry? REALLY? The copyright holder's first name is Tina, and in the dedication she thanks Chris and Henry for making everything worthwhile. You don't suppose.....? No. Just a coincidence, I'm sure. Anyway, back to the review! [Insert a plot synopsis here. I don't plan to, so there's plenty of room.] Madeline Black is the heroine of this first book in a new series. The book has all of the usual ingredients for a new series, including a decent world, a good cast of supporting characters (even if Ms. Henry bumps off an interesting one right at the beginning of the story), a quirky mascot, and an original hook in the romance department. Seems that she and the love interest have a really nasty barrier keeping them 'apart' - - one that's good enough that they never really get further than light kissing and heavy breathing. The plot moved along well, and avoided the trap of getting too terrily hung up in its own mythology. There were even some surprises thrown in at the very end to keep you interested enough to return for book #2. In my case, the surprises were wasted. I was already planning on waiting for another book just for the aforementioned quirky mascot, a cranky, popcorn-munching little gargoyle named Beezle. All in all, a fun time.

lizzyj2217
Elizabeth Johnson lizzyj2217 — The fourth book in Tananarive Due's African Immortals series takes us to the next generation of The Blood. Fana is the first child born to the blood of the Lalibela Colony of Immortals and must deal with the prophecy that she must join with another Blood Born of the Sanctus Cruor sect. The Sanctus Cruor sect had claimed the Blood was theirs alone. I have read the other books in the series, and see in this one the development and maturing of Fana's parents, Jessica and Dawit, their love for her and desire to protect her from losing herself to Sanctus Cruor, forgetting her mission to heal the world with a serum made from the blood. I was surprised to see Phoenix Smalls, a character from Joplin's Ghost in this story. But she is a perfect fit with her past of a telepathic relationship with a ghost. Fana is a fan of Phoenix's music, and it is through the music that Fana stays grounded to who she is. The telepathic joining and mingling of the courses of Fana and Michel her intended, invaded my own night dreams, combining with visions of telepathic X-men. (I shouldn't read before bed) Is there more for Fana to accomplish? Will Jessica and Dawit have another child? How long must we wait for the next in the series? But I'm thinking of the child's prayer: Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. That was the point when my babies did their God Bless-ing everybody. Did Fana do that already?

kamracs
Racheal Nankunda kamracs — I'm writing this review so that I can remember different things about it for book club. Fellow club members, beware of spoilers. Like John, I wish I knew a damn thing about guns so I could understand what was wrong with his. Sara and Willow seemed a bit too good for me, like they were there to be microscopes more than characters. I was engrossed by the Seton family, especially Spencer, Charlotte, and Nan. Spencer is my argumentative side, the one who would ask God for a sign, see a hand come from the heavens pointing down, and then ask what the hell that means. Charlotte was a good kid with the wrong choice at the wrong moment. Nan I wish had been explored more. Especially the scene in which she asks her son about her work and is relieved to avoid the intimacy. Aren't we all like that? Don't we all let routine and activity replace intimacy? Overally, I liked it but I wanted more. I especially should not have read this after Ehrenreich, because I kept asking myself why the author didn't have the nerve to make money an issue. Because Americans don't like taking on class, even in the safe world of fiction.
