a great self-help book for people who hate self-help books. good, practical advice about keeping yourself accountable to how you spend your money. and it totally validates excessive debt from student loans!! the concept of being debt free by 30 is laughable for my situation, but i still got a lot out of it.

** spoiler alert ** Lucky Girl, by Mei-Ling Hopgood, was an exploration into the Chinese culture. The writing at times seemed a bit scattered, but scattered or not, it was written well and with nearly palpable feeling. Mei-Ling was given up for adoption just after she was born. As the sixth of seven girls (her younger sister was also given up for adoption) born into a culture that favors male heirs, Mei-Ling was adopted out to a middle-class Michigan couple who loved her as their own. The Hopgoods also eventually adopted two boys from Korea to help complete their multicultural family. Mei-Ling grows up knowing she is adopted and sometimes struggling to find her identity in a sea of white, but always enjoying her American lifestyle. In her early 20s, she takes the opportunity to travel and meet her biological family, and chaos ensues. Her sisters welcome her into the brood and she learns more about the Chinese culture than she has ever known before. Hopgood speaks of her struggles in the simple things, like communicating, which is ironic because people in the United States assume she can speak Mandarin because of the way she looks. Through many visits with her family, she learns the details of her past and the family secrets her sisters have tried to keep from her. In the end, she realizes just how lucky of a girl she is for having been adopted by her parents. I enjoyed this book, even though it wasn't something I would have picked up for myself. If memoirs interest you, this one is definitely worth reading. P.S. I received an advance reading copy of this book through a Goodreads First Reads book giveaway.

McDougall is a great storyteller; so, as far as the story goes, it is wonderful. McDougall also introduces the reader to many new ideas and theories, although he tends to preach them as if they were already fact (or at least obvious fact that everyone should have realized). For example, there are many competing theories about human muscoloskeletal systems and claiming that we were NOT born to do endurance runs and that such runs are harmful. Regardless of the cumbersome interludes, the story that he uses to introduce them makes them all the interesting and I quite enjoyed it.

Het eerste boek was wat te gefragmenteerd door de vele 'short stories', waardoor de rode draad te veel naar de achtergrond werd gedrukt. Maar zodra het 2e boek begint gaat het los. Wat mij ook bevalt tov het vorige (min of meer) vergelijkbare SF boek wat ik heb gelezen (Collector) is dat het hier veel minder geforceerd overkomt. In Collector leek het alsof de schrijver je zijn 'geniale' wereld en afkortingen etc door de strot wilde duwen. Waardoor ik me er te bewust van bleef dat het allemaal verzonnen was, het las niet lekker. Bij dit boek voelde het veel en veel natuurlijker aan. Ja, het is sci fi en dat merk je wel, maar het is minder KIJK MIJ EENS SCI FI ZIJN WOOHOO, en meer een natuurlijk feit waar niet moeilijk over gedaan wordt. Niet overdreven veel uitleg, als iets niet duidelijk is kom je er gaandeweg wel achter. Vlot geschreven boek wat constant een aangenaam tempo heeft, op het einde na wat alsnog een beetje plotseling komt.

Prior to reading this book, I had little knowledge on the Middle East crisis. It provides a historical reference of Middle Eastern countries and their conflicts. Friedman's depiction is educational, insightful and intriguing.
