Emily L emily044e — Totally awesome book. Makes you think of whether you'd rather be ignorant and happy, or aware and alarmed. Was the Garden of Eden necessarily a good thing, and who exactly gets to decide?

ajrc
Antonio Romero ajrc — I liked the themes Salinger developed through the book, but failed to be emotionally gripped by the protagonist. Holden Caulfield is very cleverly and presicely drawn as a character, but ultimately I found his perspective frustratingly, unrelentingly myopic and that really alienated me as a reader. The only part of the story I thought particularly redeeming was from Phoebe's entrance onwards. Holden's desire to protect his kid sister was rather poignant, if bleak, and I recall the scene at the carousel vividly. Had Salinger explored greater character growth for Holden, I might have enjoyed the book substantially more. As it is, I tend to think of Catcher as a very detailed portrait of the arrogant but anxious, disaffected teen, but lacking any progression through those faults. For me the much more interesting question is, how does someone who finds the adult world a dissatisfactory place learn to live in it and engage with it on their own terms?

Alexander Delapenha _lex_elapenha — I try to reread this book every year, along with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Just give it a try.

jmanzo
Joe Manzo jmanzo — McDougall is a great storyteller; so, as far as the story goes, it is wonderful. McDougall also introduces the reader to many new ideas and theories, although he tends to preach them as if they were already fact (or at least obvious fact that everyone should have realized). For example, there are many competing theories about human muscoloskeletal systems and claiming that we were NOT born to do endurance runs and that such runs are harmful. Regardless of the cumbersome interludes, the story that he uses to introduce them makes them all the interesting and I quite enjoyed it.

Elena Brusyanskaya cheberinaa448 — Over all I thought the book was interesting. The concepts regarding the total invasion of privacy by the government were powerful, imaginative and timely. Excellent use of imagery throughout. However, I did not like the ending too much. The arcane forms of torture and interrogation that were described seemed to be a reach. And it was not at all clear if the main character lives on, or merely hallucinates the remainder of his life.

Ngomong-ngomong soal romantis, ada bagian yang aku suka dan menurutku romantis abis, di halaman 104 waktu Tae-Sik nembak Minnie :)) I Love You (Love You) I Want You (Want You) I Need You (Need You) 'Cause I choose you (Choose you) Minnie mendengarkan reff lagu I Love You sambil menatap Tae-Sik dengan bingung. Tae-Sik menarik napas dan mendekat, ia berbisik, tepat ditelinga Minnie. Ia mengucapkan satu kalimat lanjutan dari lagu, "ijeya gaseumeseo haneunmal, neoreul mannagoya paenmal." Satu tarikan napas panjang lagi, Minnie bisa merasakan telinganya terbelai desahan napas Tae-Sik. "I love you, Minnie. Be my girlfriend.." Let's make our love just like a bubble love. Let's make it transparent so that we can see the rainbows in our love. And i swear that this bubble love in the most precious love that i will never pop. 3 sayap untuk si gelembung cinta :))
