A bizarre book, to say the least -- she says in a letter quoted in the introduction that she was tired of heavy, formalist experiments and just wanted to kick up her heels with a farce. Nothing says easy whimsy like a 500-year old woman who never ages and who switches gender and who torments herself about the place of art and the artist! And who is both based and not based on a friend of hers whose picture and family history is intertwined with the general nuttiness (if somebody wrote this book based on me I would sue). It is true, though, that "Orlando" is essentially a "romp"; tons of crazy and sometimes very funny stuff happens, but this is in tension with the fact that it is simultaneously a serious meditation on the nature of history and the self, and the way these two mutually constitute one another.

Hayes is the foremost authority to the western world on everything Ninja. I would give this book an "R" rating, too, however.
John Green does it again. This delightful, madcap novel is another coming of age story and is about Colin, an child prodigy who has only dated girls named Katherine. Breaking up with the latest Katherine has sent him into a funk, so his best friend Hassad decides a road trip is in order. Their destination, Gutshot TN, is a town full of eccentric locals who persuade them to stay. In a field of generic "coming of age" teen novels, John Green's novels shine.

I honestly couldn't care less of this book is fiction or non-fiction, it's an AMAZING book. From the first page to the last, this gut wrenching book delivers on all levels. It's in my all time top 25 books, fiction or not.

A good start to a great series. As an adult, I found the tone juvenile, but as a teacher I understand that the books are written to appeal to students that are near Harry's age in each of the books. Ms. Rowling is a wonderful storyteller and has created characters that would be etched in our hearts forever, even if the movies hadn't been made.

This was a good one. I was a bit thrown at first by the shifts in time and dialect, but quickly got into the rhythm of it. A good LOL book.

Book #12 of 2009 That was surprisingly engaging, even if it took me forever to finish it. The book basically revolves around the main character trying to figure out what really happened eight years ago when he was grazed by a stray bullet, disfiguring him for life. There was enough action and twists to keep me engaged, but some of the pieces seem like loose ends. For example, one of the characters goes to a former collegue for help figuring a code out. Although this former collegue cracks the code, and we read about it because the narration is focused on him briefly, NO OTHER CHARACTERS EVER FIND OUT. Why not just introduce the information a different way? Which brings me to my biggest complaint, there was too much switching back and forth between characters. Chapters were often only two pages long. I felt like I was reading the equivalent of a cliffhanger at the beginning of a commercial break, complete with suspensful music, at the end of EVERY chapter. It got old after awhile. I'm also not sure that I was a huge fan of the ending, vague though it was, although on the other hand, the ending was fitting. Borrowed from the Library

A must for anybody learning go. I had already been playing for a while when I read it, yet it still had tactics to offer. And even if you know all the tesuji in the world there are plenty of puzzles to solve. I have read this book maybe 3 times cover to cover, but found it much more useful to read a chapter and then play some games trying to apply the tactics I had learned.

When you read this book, you will gain a greater understanding of Cuba's revolution, and the impact it had on people who lived in Cuba who were "eliminated" because they did not buy into Castro's Communist government. In the early 60's, Cuban children were being removed from their parents' homes to be indoctrinated in government boarding schools. Lucia's father, considered an anti-revolutionary, lost his bank job and through family betrayal, had all their hard-earned jewelry and possessions taken from them by the government. The loss of freedom, persecution, and the idea that children were being taken away from their families, led Lucia's father and mother to make a very hard decision... This is the coming of age story of Lucia, a child who once lived in a free Cuba, only to have her entire childhood taken away from her as a young teenager, when her parents, considered anti-revolutionary, sold a pair of diamond earrings Lucia's mom had inherited from her mother, to provide exit visas for Lucia and her younger brother to flee Cuba. Operation Pedro Pan was a plan to place over 14,000 "unaccompanied" Cuban children in homes and orphanages around the United States, with the help of the Catholic Welfare Bureau. Lucia and her brother were placed with a family in Nebraska. Would she be able to go back to her homeland? Would she be able to keep a friendship with her best friend who remained in Cuba? Would she be accepted into this new culture? Would she ever see her parents again? No young teenager should be faced with these daily nagging questions... Bravo, Christina Diaz Gonzalez for capturing your own piece of history to write this compelling novel for young adults!
