_unmpy
Vanessa Duquesnay _unmpy — A bizarre book, to say the least -- she says in a letter quoted in the introduction that she was tired of heavy, formalist experiments and just wanted to kick up her heels with a farce. Nothing says easy whimsy like a 500-year old woman who never ages and who switches gender and who torments herself about the place of art and the artist! And who is both based and not based on a friend of hers whose picture and family history is intertwined with the general nuttiness (if somebody wrote this book based on me I would sue). It is true, though, that "Orlando" is essentially a "romp"; tons of crazy and sometimes very funny stuff happens, but this is in tension with the fact that it is simultaneously a serious meditation on the nature of history and the self, and the way these two mutually constitute one another.

cicicyriel090d
Cyrielle Rouppert cicicyriel090d — Wonderfully evocative and rip-roaring. Rip-roaring! Rip-roaring, I tell ye! Early astronauts = luv. Gus Grissom = the hatch just blew! Dennis Quaid, er, Gordo Cooper = the best pilot you ever saw. Five stars, because the movie is glorious and full of cute crewcuts. And because it has Sam Shepard, my Austin honkytonk crony. Girlish glee aside, though, I loved this book. I loved the audacity and the guts and the pilot-speak. Wolfe also does a great job of showing what it's like for a wife to sit at home and wait for the man in the black suit to come and tell her that Cappy's plane took a dive. Plus, I lived at Edwards in the 1980s. Even though Wolfe's describing that base as it was decades earlier, it was exactly as I remembered it. So this book's got everything for me. Physical and mental exertion, male bonding, chimps in space, sonic booms, and the Mojave Desert.

tomhorna
Tom Horna tomhorna — Well, it's pretty...? That's all that counts, right? What is plot any good for, anyway? This one gets two stars for the artwork. Plot counts for nothing.

sntbarron
Leilani Santana sntbarron — While I don't really agree with her philosophies, I thought that the character development and story-telling were great. I had already read The Fountainhead, which I prefer out of the two, so I was familiar with her anti-altruist rhetoric. I enjoyed the book quite a bit, and it kept me very engaged the whole time (minus the 60-page monologue, which I skipped).

marianaozuna
Mariana Ozuna marianaozuna — This is an important, nay essential book for anyone of any belief or nonbelief to read. Lewis is an intelligent man and explains what the essence of Christianity is and what it means to atheists, to Christians of any denomination, and to people of other religions. He goes even farther, to explain atheism and to a lesser degree the other major belief systems to Christians. He shows Christians how much they have in common with each other. He does this in a very logical, philosophically sound fashion. He does this in an intelligible way, as the book originated in a spoken radio interview. He brings religion to the forefront of reason. How can we say we seek for world peace and prosperity if we don't try to understand each other?
