I would have given this 4 or even 5 stars for the first half of the book, but the second half falters a little and it just wasn't as strong a finish. That being said: I loved much of this book. It's been a little while since I've read the Anne of Green Gables books, but I felt like this was a bit of welcome departure for L.M. Montgomery. I was shocked to find open discussion of drunkenness and illegitimate children, which isn't that shocking today, but rare to find in polite books of the early 20th century. But I think it's because the main character is 29, that Montgomery let the subject matter mature a bit. Valancy Stirling is 29 and an old maid. She's put upon by her family, subject to their relentless teasing, put-downs and treated as a burden, though she works very hard. Because she fears growing old and having to depend on her family, she takes the abuse, which turns her into a sad, pathetic prematurely old woman. When pangs in her chest drive her to secretly see a non-Stirling-approved doctor, Valancy discovers that she has angina and is not expected to live out the year. It's this knowledge that spurs on the story. Valancy vows to actually live for the remainder of her life, to say what she thinks and to no longer let people treat her as less then. I laughed out loud several times during this period, because she just lays into her family. A conversation between Valancy and her Aunt Isabel: "Doss, you are horribly thin," she said. "You are ALL corners. Do you EVER try to fatten up a little?" "No." Valancy was not asking quarter or giving it. "But I can tell you where you'll find a beauty parlour in Port Lawrence where they can reduce the number of your chins." The story is very empowering, watching Valancy morph from sad little spinster to a lovely woman in charge of her own destiny. There's colorful characters throughout, I just felt the ending was a little too Dickensian for my taste. Definitely worth a read!
