A historical fiction, primarily character driven. I'm not one necessarily to read books about the civil war, but as a Canadian with a very limited knowledge, it was tempting to fill in gaps. As it turns out, the novel deals primarily with after effects of the war (sound familiar? Have you been reading the Post?) on those involved. I'll confess to not anticipating the end, and to being a little surprised by it. That said, the story really developed and the unfolded. I really enjoyed Cold Mountain, and read it after many suggestions from friends. A story about overcoming adversity and horror, but primarily about the forces that drive us all. Read it, you won't regret it.

I don't know for sure but I guess, after the success (and the upcoming Oliver Stone film based on it) of Don Winslow's brilliant SAVAGES, Simon & Schuster decided to reissue this 2009 novel in hardcover. Winslow's staccato prose grabs you by the throat and pulls you through any of his novels -- his pacing and sense of rhythmn is second to none. But even though I couldn't put this down, I felt the various elements in the book felt dated. The book is about a surfing detective, and the descriptions of the beach and surfing are gorgeous, lyrical. And the friendships among the all male surfers seem very real. But when the protagonist, Boone Daniels, a former cop now turned PI, is asked by an older surfer to look into whether or not his wife is having an affair, and is also asked by his sort-of-girlfriend, a lawyer, to help her with a case against an accused murderer, Boone's perfectly balanced life starts to fall apart. Sure, he solves the case and all the various elements of the plot, incuding insurance fraud and a Mexican drug cartel, come together quite neatly, but I felt the white supremacist angle had been done before. And while the plot didn't strike me as fresh, I thought this was terrific for its exploration of men's friendships and its depiction of the multiracial surfing culture on a now aging member of it. Winslow is always worth reading for his prose -- he's got those two paragraph chapters down (as in, THIS is how you do it, Patterson), and knows how to distill his prose to the absolute essence of the few words necessary to express himself. And he has a dry sense of humor. What's really interesting about the prose in this book is that sharp as it is, I bet, if Winslow were to rewrite it now, he'd streamline and distill it even more, he's gotten that much better with his language. And who at S & S approved the crappy new dark cover? It doesn't begin to suggest the richness of the atmosphere within.

An excellent fictionalized version of the Kennedy assassination, alternating between the life of Oswald, and a CIA conspiracy to drum up support for Cuba that quickly spirals out of control. Confusing at times, but then shouldn't conspiracies be a little confusing? A much better entry point to DeLillo than the other books of his that I've read (Underworld is massive, White Noise is annoying).

Being a story of only some 74 pages it was a good one. I love the characters in the Night Huntress series.

Wonderful writer, gripping story of pre-WWI and the Christian/Moslem rift created, as usual, by politicians. Read just after bicycling the length of Turkey, and the village life is still recognizable. One of the very few books I will read multiple times.

Ragtime is iconic, with figures like Harry Houdini and Emma Goldman featured as characters, while still being an extremely well-written piece of literature, and addressing so many of the political and social issues of the time which are, frankly, still often political and social issues today (or perhaps, more where certain p. and s. issues relevant to contemporary situations really kind of began, with the 20's being a booming time where corporate America really got its firm foothold in the power structure of politics and economy, and when socialistic and communistic ideology became blacklisted upon the social consciousness of mainstream America)--frankly, Doctorow rocks my world in ways few writers have ever come close to doing.

I expected a book by the father of a meth addict to be either whiney (poor me) or preachy (drugs are bad) but this book was neither. The author wrote of the love of his son and how drug use damaged their lives.
I was drawn into the plot, but I was put off by the main protagonist Robert Dudley. I felt that the beginning of his betrayal was starting to get a bit stupid. The authour portrayed this very well and I give her credit, but I didn't like it at all.
