All of modern Western philosophy is essentially a response to Rene Descartes. In 1637, Descartes made the famous statement "cogito ergo sum": I think, therefore I exist. I might be a brain in a vat being deceived by an evil scientist or trapped in the Matrix. The external world, and even my own body, may not actually exist. I can doubt everything except my own existence, because I have to be here to do the doubting! Amazingly, no one since has come up with a completely air-tight case for the existence of the external world. This may sound rather academic, but it has ramifications for every branch of philosophy, and none more so than ethics and morality. If you'd like to have a crash course in modern Western philosophy, with an emphasis on ethics and morality, this would be a good start. This book is written for the layman, and with a considerable amount of humor. What better way to finish this review than with this classic joke: Descartes walks into a bar. The bartender asks Descartes if he'd like his usual drink. Descartes replies "I think not" and promptly disappears. I'll be here all night. Try the veal.

Got it in mp3 format so I guess I have got the best of both worlds - the content and the "best read out loud to you" part. I found my mind constantly wondering and trying to decipher what each sequence in the story was supposed to "teach" you and what effect it was meant to have, what techniques were used and why, which interfered with my total immersion and enjoyment of the story. But at times I did find myself being "hypnotized" into total focus on what was being read out loud and hanging on every word waiting to find out how the events are going to unfold. Alas I can not get it out of my head what exactly is this fable meant to DO and who it is meant to have the reader go through subconscious changes, so if you are bent on self analysis like I am stay away from the book as it will probably forever remain an unsolved mystery nagging at the back of your mind.

I first read this at university, but decided that it was long past time to reread it. In the first few pages, I couldn't see why it had made such a strong impression on me. But by the end of the "Editor's Notes", I'd remembered. And there's so much about it that I'd forgotten - especially the latter part of it. So a rare star upgrade from my original rating. It tells the story of a 'justified' sinner, who believes he's already one of God's elect on Earth, and therefore his place in Heaven is already assured, and then throws a supernatural twist into it. Neatly told from from two different perspectives, it's a fascinating study of how the Devil can twist the beliefs of someone who things he's one of the Elect, and twist them on their head to make him destroy those who try to do good, and ultimately himself. In my view, the bit that's really clever about it, is that the first version of events you see is the more objective "Editor's Notes"; and then it revisits the same events - and many more - from the point of view of the 'justified sinner', who manages to rationalise murder as doing God's work, when in fact he's doing the complete opposite.

This is a beautiful hard-cover edition. I don't like to judge books by their cover (or rather, they're title pages), but the care taken in the design of this book definitely adds to the magic of the story of Alice (or Alyss, as the case may be). This is the type of book I'm always looking for and rarely find. I don't want to say that this is the story that should have been within the covers of the original Alice in Wonderland, but it gets pretty close.

A nice overview of what is in a house as a young girl reminisces about the different places in her old house before she moves to a new one.

really intersting book - tony blair 'uncovered' in a fictional sense - also great intro to the art of Ghost Writing as the main character is ghosting the ex PM's life story

I loved reading the actual words that Marx wrote. With it comes a realization that the word "communist" has been villifed and contorted beyond recognition of its original meaning. Completely fascinating and inspiring
