Out of all the biographies that Frank McCourt has written, this is the best and most lyrical. Warm, humorous, and well-written. For those who love biographies or are interested in their Irish ancestory.

this is one of those books (there are a few here on my goodreads page) that i really loved at the time i read it. unfortunately, that was a long time ago so i really am not sure if it's 5-stars according to susie's ratings circa 2009. but accd'g to susie's ratings circa 1999, it was a winner.

This story is about a man who was an alcoholic...and we're supposed to find redeeming qualities about him and his life? Really? I kept reading because I thought it would get better--offer some hope for the characters. No such luck.

Probably more 2.5 stars. Quite enjoyable, but there were parts that were unbelievable, regardless of the fantasy aspect (eg (view spoiler)). This is a good novel for female affirmation, but I won't continue the series.

Ugh. This was a horrible book, I haven't disliked something this much in a long time. I'm giving it two stars because I was at least compelled enough to read the whole thing. First of all...the writing. There were WAY too many awful similes that had me rolling my eyes and snorting with distaste. I don't really care that much about writing styles...so for me to say the writing was bad really is saying something. I felt like she was making the characters do things to fit into the story, and that has always bugged me. I think the story should fit the characters...you shouldn't have to make them do things that seem unnatural. The plot, somewhat interesting...but not carried out well at all. About halfway through I realized it really wasn't going to get better and thought "oh well, at least things with Jace and Clary are somewhat interesting." Then (major spoiler ahead, so don't read on if you plan on picking this up)...they turn out to be brother/sister?? What the heck, they had kissed and had wonderful chemistry and they are SIBLINGS? Their relationship was about the only thing interesting or captured well in the story...and even that was ruined. I really had high hopes for this too. Bummer.

Written for young readers. A good quick way to refresh or learn more history.

This is the story of the Moffatt family of New Hampshire. Wes Moffatt is a local cable television celebrity who claims to be an authority on his small town's history, including the Talbert Treaty signed many years earlier by the Native American inhabitants of the land and the white settlers. His wife, who everyone, even her children, call Sister, is a former nun who maintains her highly religious sentiments and has visions of the future His son, Daniel "Boone" Moffatt, is the town's police chief, whereas his daughter, Veronica, is a nurse who drinks too much and takes too many happy pills. Then there's Reggie, who was kicked out by his wife and lives in Cinderella's Castle in Disney World. Much of the story is narrated by Daniel, who is visited on a semi-regular basis by Satan, but who also forgets the Latin spell his mother taught him to get rid of old Sticks (as he is called in the book). The main plot line involves a group of presumed Native Americans, led by a woman called Sarah Running Doe, who attempt to claim the land and the trouble this causes for Wes, who claimed that he has seen the treaty that granted the land to the white settlers. He, of course, can't produce it because it's one of the many tall tales that has been his stock-in-trade for so many years. Other plots include Daniel and Veronica's attempts to cajole Reggie to return to New Hampshire for their parent's 50th anniversary; Daniel's several run-ins with Satan (including a harrowing scene on a plane and in a forest clearing); Veronica's strained relationship with her two daughters; and a serial killer who terrorized (and terrorizes) New England. But it is also a tale of redemption on several levels. The story has much to offer: comedy, touching moments, horror. Its main strength is the endearing characters in the Moffatt family. It's mostly an enjoyable read with a too quick (and conveniently neat) ending for my taste.

This book covers something you never think about -- what happened to the animals in the Warsaw zoo during WWII? The only warning I have is that in addition to the more familiar tragic human war stories you can now add tragic animal stories (along with some happy ones!). The book is really moving, with very heroic characters and also some interesting, insane facts about Nazi views on animal eugenics.
Fucking awesome book dealing with the psychology of happiness as it applies to ladies. Ariel Gore has a very inclusive perspective as a queer mama, and is able to analyze current psychology sexism in a way that feels both meaningful, relevant and ~duh~ actually helpful. I LOVED this book.

This is a really stunning book. The writing is sparse, vivid, and sensual. A beautiful, personal love story that also conveys the enormity of the Cambodian genocide (1975-79) in which two MILLION people died... As the story unfolds, it gathers momentum and weight and was surprisingly moving in the end.
