Loved. Her first two books just had me hooked. So. Frickin. Funny.
Etched in Bone by Adrian Phoenix Urban Fantasy- Feb. 22nd, 2011 3 ½ stars This story is the forth in the Maker’s Song series. As a newbie to the series I was impressed by the complexity of the world the author created but this also made it difficult to keep up with the storyline. This book starts out with a bang as the heroine, FBI agent Heather Wallace is unknowingly betrayed by her family in the first two chapters. The rest of the book backtracks to the days before this tragic event and mainly features Heather’s lover Dante. Dante is faced with some very torturous changes as he is pulled from all sides. But his one reprieve is his love for Heather. Gritty, dark and filled with drama and despair. I liked the gutsy heroine and could feel her courage, pain and anguish. Dante is more of a mysterious character who is definitely sexy. I liked how multifaceted this novel was but this also ensured that I had to concentrate to follow it. I am conflicted about this book because while I give the author kudos for the seamy world and interesting characters, the storyline did not have a real payoff at the end. This made me feel a bit cheated. I wish the author had made the early chapters and ending a separate book and not added them to the rest of the storyline. I understand this is an Urban Fantasy series but usually authors have more resolve at the end than this horrendous cliffhanger. Because of this, and not having read the previous books, the story eventually frustrated me in many ways. If you are a fan of this series, I believe you will love this book. But if you haven’t read this series yet I would start with one of the earlier books first or maybe wait to read this book after the next book comes out. An excellent book that deals with struggles of racism. It may take awhile to get used to Ellison's style of writing, but well worth the read.

fantastic and ingrossing in a way that you'd never imagine a collection of full page comic strips would be, its 38 pages feel like more than 80 pages in size, more than 800 in scope, it is the perfect antidote to all the sacarine commemorative nonsence that refuses to deal with the issues, and at the same time its an antidote to all the conspiracy theory's that get lost in certain aspects of the issues or even of an issue and never admit how speculative and racked by tunnel vision they are. this work, this tome, revels in its tunnel vision and it makes you share it, then the tunnel opens up and you see things you didn't expect. Art spiegelman is both the everyman and the extraordinary, the mad and the sane, in ten spreads he explores cultural resonances that go back near to a hundred years, and if he did spend over a month on some of them well it was worth it, and every ounce of work put in shows in the finished piece.

Practical stuff that can really make a difference. But why did he choose to put himself on the cover?

I enjoyed this and thought it was a pleasant example of the "James Herriot" style of memoir (although I suspect David Kennard could be rather fed up with that description). Mr Kennard had an agreeable writing style and an interesting (and fast disappearing) way of life.

Murakami's memoir is insightful, well thought out, and very reflective of running as a sport, but also as a form of self discipline. I also liked that he included a section on training for a triathlon and the mental strength training he had to undergo both as a writer and runner. Recommended!

This almost got 4 stars from me. The plot is quite interesting; there are twists and turns that keep you guessing as to who the real culprit is, especially since even those who don't turn out to be the villain all seem to have something to hide. And most of the reveals in the end are satisfying and believable. The whole book is squeaky clean. The main character is fairly likable; she's smart and trying to do the right thing, and she makes a few stupid mistakes and bad judgment calls but they all feel authentic, like you can imagine yourself doing the same thing. And the story of her slowly reconciling with her father is surprisingly moving. But there are a few things that drag this back down to 3 stars. The worst offender, in my opinion, is the way the characters and the narrative occasionally turn into encyclopedias. The author's research is interesting and informs the story, but sometimes it's as though there's a chunk that doesn't fit in naturally but, unwilling to discard it, she shoves it into a character's mouth, leading to passages where regular people having a regular conversation suddenly burst out into long and ridiculously detailed paragraphs that begin with Wikipedia-esque phrases like "There are several schools of thought on where the name Fire Island comes from." And I just started skimming the parts where she talks about the many, many steps required in keeping a lighthouse going. Also, the main character is occasionally quite useless and passive; there's a part where someone is wandering around the base of the lighthouse with a lantern, and she wishes that her gentleman friend were there to go check it out. I mean, I understand perfectly well the idea of not wanting to confront someone you don't know alone and in the dark, but watching a character literally waiting up in her tower for someone else to come solve her problems is a little irritating. I mean, she could have done something. And then there's the fact that even though it's set in the 1920s on a small and remote fishing island on the East Coast, EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER IS MORMON. Well, almost every character. Now, I am Mormon. I like Mormons a whole lot. But it's a little hard for me to believe in a town thousands of miles from Utah, back when the Church was still fairly small and had a lot fewer missionaries than they do now, where most people you meet are LDS. It was almost a joke by the end, wondering which character was going to wander into Sunday School this time. But it's a sweet little book and quite unobjectionable. And the story of the main character's relationship with her father, with her realizations that despite her always feeling the victim, she herself was in many ways to blame for their estrangement, actually made me reexamine relationships in my own life. And that's pretty high praise you can give a book. So, almost 4 stars.

The "chronicle" here is the story of Captain Leander Wapshot and his sons, Coverly and Moses, and their lives on the New England coast. Parts of the story are told through Leander's diary, though other chapters are written as flashes, like pieces of short stories. This is Cheever's first novel, being a short story writer first so an entire novel being written in that format is not particularly surprising. It often reminded me of, ugh, Sinclair Lewis, or, double-ugh, Sherwood Anderson, but for a long while I gave Cheever several second chances. The book started strong, but about halfway through I threw my hands in the air and could not honestly care less or more about any of the characters. It felt stagnant and I lost touch of the Wapshots and their gripings. Still, I hear that his short stories are better, so eventually I will get to that ginormous collection I have that I keep putting off in fear that I just won't like Cheever. And maybe - just maybe - I might someday also get around to reading the second book, The Wapshot Scandal.

This is a really nice piece of fiction. It brings up questions about the nature of love, time and how we fit into our own lives. It's a quick read and leaves you satisfied.

Harika kitap. Esprili, kişisel, çok gerçek. Çok şey öğrendim ve çok şaşırdım. Bazen komik, bazen duygusal, ama kesinlikle kontrol etmeye değer.
