This book is funny. I like how the people move.

I lovee it when I read a book and at the end the picture on the front, which has until that moment remained obscure, finally makes sense. The front cover has four men on the front - a kind of 19th century duel - two men facing each other and two seconds off to the side. Neither the title nor the picture seemed remotely connected to the narrative until the last pages. The book opens with four men at a funeral of a former lover. She has nurtured each of these men in different ways and they are essentially fighting over her memory. This book is about self identity, friendship, memory, shared or solitary and ultimately fear of the unknown. Their inarticulate desire for respect leads to them acting immorally and to their own detriment. I found this to be a well sculpted and beautifully written book. I must go on and read more Ian McEwan.

Started off extremely slow, and the amnesia concept is getting way overused. No one ever explains why its necessary to have the characters lose their memories. Just send ambassadors and be open about it. The characters also state very clearly that Gaea is controlling death, so she decides who lives and dies. Therefore, heroes stay dead and monsters do not. However, in the first mock battle a Roman hero dies and mysteriously comes back; Gwen. Yet no one suspected her of being on Gaea's side, and nothing further came of this event. No accusations are even made concerning who killed her. Eventually (after 3/5 of the book has passed) the quest begins. It becomes interesting for a time then feels insanely rushed at the end. I believe barely two small chapters are dedicated to the final battle. Also, how does an elephant stop a giant made out of precious stones and gold? There was a decent lead-up of Frank hopefully becoming a Dragon and yet that never happened. In closing, there was no conclusion to the book. No epilogue or feeling of completion. Nothing was explained about the harpy, and Octavian is all but forgotten as an anti-hero.

I'd seen this book lurking in the "diet" section of many bookstores and passed it off as another icky fad diet book. Then a copy wandered into the new/used bookstore I call home 40 hours a week. I scanned through the first few pages and was hooked! These are certainly some foul-mouthed ladies but they promote health and, yes...veganism! They point out that one of the reasons they wrote the book was that they "could not tolerate the cruelty associated with a meat-eating diet." The title is rather misleading as the focus is neither on skinny nor bitchy. This is a very good, very short (I finished it in a few hours with breaks) intro to veganism promoted in a more "glamourous" way as opposed to taking the hippie approach. Hey, whatever it takes to reach the masses, I say. There's a bunch of information on the meat and dairy industries and also a list of easy-to-find vegan "convenience" foods as well as the requisite vegan book list of "hidden" animal ingredients. Read it for such sound advice as "You need to excercise, you lazy shit."

I'm not sure why this book, with its constant rectal temperature-taking, is so charming, but it is. And it is super funny, in a sophisticated and witty way. I was pretty impressed with the writing throughout. This memoir was a HUGE hit in the 1970's, a country veterinarian recounts stories of his first jobs with animals during the 1930's, working as an intern for a more established vet. Super funny, and endearing...and I don't really like animals or science.

Amazing... But as with all 2 of 3 books, left me feeling a little frustrated when it ended. I want more story!

I rarely use the word hauntingly, but I would describe this story as hauntingly beautiful. It seemed to flow off the page and into my head, creating a lush world while allowing for my imagination to fill in the gaps. I adored the fragile relationships that Ash formed with the fairy and the huntress. All in all, since I love fairy tale retellings, this was an enjoyable read, and worth the time spent.

If you like to read about celebrity gossip you will most likely enjoy this book. Although I am not a huge celeb gossip queen, I did enjoy parts of this book. It does have an okay story to it.

You know what? I know Michael Chabon is supposed to be a great American novelist or something and if that I appreciate literature I'm supposed to worship the ground he walks on. But, this is my third Michael Chabon book and I just don't think we're ever going to be friends. I liked Kavalier and Clay a lot, except for that bit where they get mired in Antarctica; and I liked Summerland, except that it was just so focused on baseball. And I even like baseball. So, considering that I appear to like his style of writing, but not so much the things he writes about, perhaps I should have known that a whodunit/messiah story/Jewish identity struggle/alternate reality that hinges on a chess game might not quite be up my alley. However. I persevered. And it was really hard to follow. This was probably not helped much by the fact that I was listening to it usually a bit distracted as I rode around town. I did enjoy his style of writing--this story was packed with entertaining metaphors, and the reader did a great job of bringing the story to life. But I was relieved when it was over. If you are going to read this book, maybe you will enjoy it. Maybe you get along with Michael Chabon better than I do. But I would advise reading it when you have a week or something to devote to it before you have time to get lost, because once you're lost, you're not coming back.
