Bugallo Lula _ugallo_ula — I lovee it when I read a book and at the end the picture on the front, which has until that moment remained obscure, finally makes sense. The front cover has four men on the front - a kind of 19th century duel - two men facing each other and two seconds off to the side. Neither the title nor the picture seemed remotely connected to the narrative until the last pages. The book opens with four men at a funeral of a former lover. She has nurtured each of these men in different ways and they are essentially fighting over her memory. This book is about self identity, friendship, memory, shared or solitary and ultimately fear of the unknown. Their inarticulate desire for respect leads to them acting immorally and to their own detriment. I found this to be a well sculpted and beautifully written book. I must go on and read more Ian McEwan.

Andy Cho 001_abbf — Stolen from my dad's library, I discovered two things. 1). Joe DiMaggio was kind of a greedy bastard. 2). He really did love Marilyn Monroe. Of course, Marilyn Monroe was what initially drew my attention to this biography. The Marilyn chapters were my favorite. I really did think they loved each other, but it just didn't work out. I loved the fact he put roses on her grave every week until he died. Now that's devotion. That and his phenomenal baseball playing might just redeem him from his greediness and cold disregard of most people. It didn't make you hate DiMaggio, which could've been easier. I don't know if Marilyn and Joe were really going to get remarried when she died, but I'd like to believe it just because I like happy endings. I'd recommend if you were a sports buff, particularly baseball, but it's not for everybody.

He tracked down and interviewed some pretty famous dames - and interspersed the interviews with historical facts about their time as B-girls and studio favorites. Really, it's one of the most touching odes to women I've ever read.
