It was interesting to read so many caricatures of maternal figures. I felt like the author was enjoying doing a series of sketches, but Astrid bound them together into a wonderful novel. Male characters were static, but that didn't bother me much; they were just not the focus.

I forget where I got this but I'm glad I found it. This is great for people like me who love to learn about personal experiences during the Holocaust. It's different in that unique way each person experiences something and that affects me. I absolutely adored the photos and I loved how they were included as well. Instead of having the usual photo insert Kimmelman put them in sporadically and that really gave a lot to the book IMO. I'd definitely recommend to anyone looking for personal accounts - you can find many, some more well written than others and this isn't one of the best written and it's certainly not one of the worst. The fact that Kimmelman is obviously very intelligent makes the writing that much better. What she had to endure to survive is horrendous. All of it is horrendous but reading a book like this - and being brought into the story, into the persons life - brings it so much closer to home.

Okay, when I first started this book after I got through like the first few chapters I kinda (& I don't know why I did) skipped through it and read the parts that kinda ruined it for me. Well, still I made myself read it all and not skip through it this time and I'm glad I did. It was really good. I can't wait to read the next book (: In the begining Emma Vailes parents left on a mysterious buisness trip and all Emma was thinking was that it was the perfect chance to rebel. Maybe throw a few parties, get a tattoo (or a piercing) & enjoy her first few weeks of juinor year. Then her parents only worker, Susan, her old friend Abby's mother quits, to be closer to her daughter. Leaving Emma to look after the shop alone & her parents seem to have gone M.I.A. Then she start's hanging out with Natalie and her group of friends. Which eventually leads to them convincing her to throw a party at her house. Then the cops show up. They had gotten a report that Emma was living there alone. Then Natalie (whom she confided in about being alone in the first place) starts telling the cops about how Emma has been living there alone and how she can't get a hold of her parents. So, she gets put in the half-way house. That's when Bennett Stern shows up. Her handsome knight in J.crew armor. Bennett is her older brother Max's old best friend. & Her old crush. He shows up with a bunch of paperwork (which she suspects is fake but goes along with it) to be her temporary guardian & takes her to live at his museum-like mansion in New England. After that well you'll just have to read it for yourself (: But let's just say there's alot of ghostly secrets, past romances then present ones, And a few deaths along the way. Enjoy! :)

This was the second selection for my Literary Goddesses online book club. After giving Naomi and Ely’s No Kiss List a big bucket of MEH, An Abundance of Katherines came like a breath of fresh air. There are a lot of things I thoroughly enjoyed about this book — the snappy dialogue, the useful-and-funny-and-somehow-not-at-all-annoying footnotes, the hilarious best friend, and the moral of the story — accomplishments do not determine meaning, relationships determine meaning. Alyss Heart travels through two worlds to become the woman she is, but has she learned enough to regain her throne and rightful place in Wonderland? A charming twist to the original "Alice in Wonderland" tale by Lewis Carroll, "Looking Glass Wars" is full of imagination. While it can get bogged down with Alyss's internal struggle, the story presents both a girl just trying to do what's expected of her and a woman battling for good.

Nicely written semi mystery which wound up feeling more like a spy thriller due the the Party infighting. The dream/shaman type scenes also defused much of a sense of mystery. An enjoyable read well grounded in its setting, but not a great whodunit.

Although I didn't agree with all of the advise in this book, I still believe there is a reason why this book has been in print for the last 18 years. It was an invaluable book while I was pregnant and still refer to it even now. It is recomended for any first time parents and even those who are doing it all over again.
