I read this book after seeing the movie. The book and movie are quite different. I enjoyed the book but the movie was much more engaging and I think garnered more sympathy for the main character. I would recommend this book, but I would definitely recommend seeing the movie.

If this author knew me and my family I'd swear this was about us. Julia is this little boy. I am his Mom. I've even done the same exact falling bit she does when she's carrying the load of clothes in her arms and I'm fairly positive my face looked like hers also although I hate to admit it. (I do want to note that there is no man looking like the husband she had on the previous page. I can do without that thank you. And before I forget, I'm pretty sure my butt and thighs don't look like hers. Thank God above.) (Oh. And I have the same slippers too. That I wear about 97% of the time.) :-D Okay, enough of the rambling. I have to agree with another reviewer who mentioned the illustrations being a little on the freaky side. The reviewer mentioned the eyelashes looking like stitches and I didn't notice that so I went back to look. Yeah, they sure do. Now I'm trying to figure out if that's what made me so freaked out or what. The one page where you can practically see the kids spleen is the stuff nightmares are made of. I'm so glad I have a girl. Anyway, back to the story. I like Shannon, Julia and I both like his stories. And this one hits home for us for sure. Julia has far too many toys and we've gone through this exact story more than a half a dozen times. I try to pick out what she doesn't want anymore, she loses her mind because she can't part with it. This, that, this broken thing, that thing missing six pieces, no matter what it is it has some special, unseverable connection to my kid. I'm slightly surprised this is the first book like this that I've come across. It's a fantastic idea for a story really. I don't know that I can think of a better author to pull it off either. The ending is a nice addition. Julia really liked everything about the book and I need to get his others so we can read through those.

I didn't read the whole thing, but it has some really interesting ideas about how the language we use affects the relationships we have. I of course was concerned mostly with how I talk to my students, but I think this book has a lot of useful thoughts on just general conversational skills. Like how often we react with judgment when someone we care about is upset, instead of just listening and empathizing with them. It sounds very floofy when I describe it like that, but whatever - I liked it.

pretty cool! yet another goodread sailing under the radar screen. burned through the last hundred pages in a flash. love books with the surprise twist ending (similar to WHAT THE DEAD KNOW and LIAR'S DIARY). if you liked either one of those books, then i actually recommend this one. favorite line: "lena, relax", he said. "i feel like i'm holding a mattress spring." "i can feel you," i said. "you're thinking about it." he pulled me backwards, tighter against him, his hand low on my belly. "i'm a guy. i'm always thinking about it. at this point, i have at most four red blood cells bringing oxygen to my brain."
