This is a high-brow fantasy novel. Eddings has created a new world with its own complex history. I am not a fan of such fantasy because I often find trying to remember the history of a made up world to be really tedious. Trying to keep three thousand years of kings and drama straight was more than I wanted. I didn't even finish this novel. It cam highly recommended by one of my friends, but I couldn't get interested in any of the characters or the plot.

4 stars. Would have gave it a 5 if it was much longer! A great book but I wanted MORE! :)

I wanted to give this three stars, for the ending. But there was an epilogue, and perhaps that gave me time to reconsider. I was also slightly prepared for the sadness because I ended up reading a few reviews of the book 3/4 the way through, and the narrator sort of tells it before it happens as well. I really thought I was going to go with something like 3.5 stars at that point. I actually didn't know anything about the book prior to reading it aside from it being highly rated. The writing is so-so, better in some parts than others. You get the feeling that Zusak is trying to be different, sometimes maybe trying a little too hard. His descriptions sometimes sound brilliant and other times just made me feel as if I was reading an English learner's journal entry on lang-8. Actual writing aside, it made me cry, several times. It made me smile, too. It's not exactly a "cannot put down" read, nor is it a nice leisurely stroll, especially considering the emotional roller coaster it puts you through. But it's almost like a better-than-average Korean drama, with lots of ups and downs and though not having the greatest ending, decent enough to make you not regret watching it, and maybe even recommend it. And, just like a Korean drama, it's slightly gimmicky and deliberately pulls at your heartstrings.

Everyone raves about this book so I went into it with big expectations. And the book just didn't quite live up to them. I liked it. But I didn't love it. It didn't shed new light on the Buddha for me. But it's a decent rendition of the Buddha's coming into self, especially if you don't know much about him yet.

I just bought this today! I went into Cambridge (Massachusetts) and, of course headed straight to the Harvard Book Store! They have an amazing history section and this one jumped right out at me. More about it later, I'm sure!

I am a big fan of the Hex Hall series. I fell in love with Sophie Mercer and Archer Cross and their friends and Rachel's writing and I loved Rebel Belle. I loved Harper and David and I liked Bee who is a good friends, but most of all I really LOVED Ryan. I like the book, I will most definitely read the next book and await it anxiously.

John Donne's work is witty and full of many different forms of poetry. I was greatly inspired by his poetry, but frequently found his poems difficult to get deeply interested in at first. I am certain that I will only like him more as time goes on and I reread his poems. My favorite poems were "The good-morrow", "A feaver", "Communitie", and "Sir John Wingefield". "Communitie" especially is very intriguing, for while most of Donne's work seems to respect women, this poem considers them to be nothing more than possessions that men may use and discard as they see fit: Chang'd loves are but chang'd sorts of meat, And when hee hat the kernal eate, Who doth not fling away the shell? I can't speak highly enough about the quality of this volume in particular. The book is put together spectacularly and copious footnotes provide clarification of difficult or obscure references. The material is treated with the respect that is usually reserved for the Bible, and it is very clear that the editor, C.A. Patrides, put a huge amount of love and time into making this a superb comprehensive collection of Donne's work. [ See my blog post here: http://lifeanepicpoem.blogspot.com/20... ]
