Williams is an especially confounding writer, and part of it has to do with her voice—it’s very assured, but in that certainty lie the seeds of alienation and annoyance. It’s the assurance born of privilege, of money, and of an intact family. She can speak of democracy all she wants (and she does, especially in later works), but she’s at the higher end of the social spectrum—democracy (or any system) tends to work out for those people. Additionally, she tries too hard to wring some elemental truth from her prose, which, in many instances, results in a feeling of artifice. Interwoven with this tendency is perhaps the most irritating facet of her work—what can only be described as degeneration into “crystal gazing prose,” or abstract, highly pretentious, spiritual drivel. Much of her dialog rings untrue—as do several moments in the narrative (e.g. when she sticks a middle finger in the face of the hicks). On a mechanics note, her incessant use of passive verb construction acts as a sea anchor on the text. On the other hand, and this is why she is so confounding, there are moments of sublimity, truth, and flat out dynamite writing that almost make the journey worthwhile. She manipulates thematic elements throughout, balancing the concepts of “isolation” and “solitude” in a dialectical dance. “Solitude” seems the goal, synonymous with “refuge,” an acceptance of life’s rhythms (including death). And her use of the lake level is quietly effective: the story begins and ends at the same level—a subtle way of achieving a sort of closure.

I am working on reading the entire Spenser series. The last few were a bit dull but A Catskill Eagle was action packed and suspenseful. Enjoyed it!

What a beautiful read. Real literature by a real writer... Khalil Hosseini took me on a journey into a country that I have never cared much for (out of ignorance I admit that right away), but the Afghanistan he painted for me with his words made me open up to it and understand more of the horrible conflict that tore a people apart. For those who have never been in it, like me, war is incomprehensible. I watch, I listen, but I cannot relate. War on the news remains too far away and matter-of-fact for me to feel the innumerable human stories that are locked in it. And so too often I focus on other things that are going on in the world, simply because I can, simply because I can relate to them better. But in this story Khalil Hosseini helped me to get inside, at least a little bit. And it was amazing... The story of how ethnicity, friendship and social status can be so deeply intwined was moving to the bone. Many thanks to Khalil Hosseini for opening this door for me and for letting me run after his kite with him. I loved it.

Ladies, don't let the boxing scare you off from picking up this novel. It is to say the least inspirational. Not only doesn't it have a facinating setting but historical context as well. It masks itself with masculine themes but it has a real intellectual side to it that is very compelling.

Do not listen to anyone who tells you that this book is the best of the six. It isn't. (I think we've all agreed that Pawn was.) However, to devotees of the books it will seem like the best, because it's the one with the (relatively) Happy Ending. If you read any of the reviews online they all say the same thing: Dunnett seems to have lost some of her edge. This book pulls out all the stops and employs every last romance novel cliche you can think of. But it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter because it's Dunnett, and because, if you've made it this far, you're already so in love with the characters that you're willing to sacrifice anything in order to see them happy. And that's what happens. Dunnett is at her best when she has Gabriel to throw Lymond up against. When Lymond is just struggling with Gabriel's shadow, the plot is less knife-like. But, as I've noted above, no one with an ounce of heart cares. This is a great ending, and Dunnett's gift to her loyal readers. That being said, it is still, as literature, above 92% of everything else out there.

I was drawn into this series immediately. I didn't even pause after the second book to start the third. Awesome! Highly recommend, even considering its YA series.

Don't hate me -- but I LOVED this series. If someone had told me that I -- a 28 year old -- would love books about a high school girl, vampires and werewolves . . . I would have laughed in their face. However . . . they would be right
