According to Wikipedia, this book was published in Japan in 1959, before Women in the Dunes. It has a strangely pertinent plot. Melting polar ice caps are causing the sea level to rise at an alarming rate, which for Japan is a major problem. So a secret group is genetically engineering aborted fetuses to grow gills and live underwater. It is a strange book that also includes a super-computer and the communism/capitalism conflict as well. I don't think it's in print and I bought it on amazon.com's used books. If you can find it and like science fiction then its worth getting.

Agatha Christie is a horribly over rated author whose books are on the slightly perdictable side. Sad to say, "And Then There Were None" was one of her better books. Her others actually put me to sleep.

I enjoyed this story of a funny, smart woman in her 30s who is finally able to deal with a trauma that happened much earlier in her life without losing what the experience of that trauma gave her in terms of her own personality and other gifts. Sometimes I found myself just skimming the counting parts and the parts in which she talked about her long-dead hero, though, so that's why I gave this three stars instead of four or five. However, I did appreciate the specificity of those parts and how they helped the book as a whole. I absolutely loved the last chapter: it pulled everything together in a satisfying way.

Great read, nothing but fun from the first page! Adelaide Proctor just has to have her heart’s desire- a husband and a family and if God isn’t going to give her the perfect husband well then, she’ll just go get one that will do. Big mistake, but not to worry Adelaide knows how to land on her face—um feet. This a book you don’t want to put down because you just have to know if that new guy, Gideon Westcott is the one God wants for Adelaide. The setting doesn’t intrude until the bad guy shows up and that makes it from hmm okay book to good book.

A despised maid turns out to be the daughter of the baron of Cant and the successor of the land. Haven't we heared such story? Once? Twice? Hundreds of times? Why do the authors think children books shouldn't be original? One idea that I liked about the book is the fact that there can be a closed, middle-aged place of whom no one knows about, hidden among the development and modern technology of today. Sounds magical.

I decided to read this book before seeing the movie. I haven't seen the movie yet, and I'm not sure I will as the power of the story lies in not knowing the ending. Curious treatment of the Holocaust as told from the viewpoint of a young very naive German boy.

Interesting concept regarding actual literary heroines showing up at a B&B, but the book didn't quite work for me. I was expecting more heroine action. Instead, lots of flashbacks mixed somewhat unsuccessfully with the teen protagonist's current situation.
