Book eleven in Armstrong’s Otherworld series, you don’t have to read the first ten to understand what’s going on in the story. Savannah was first introduce in Stolen (book 2) at the age of 12, by book eleven, Savannah is twenty-one and is the narrator this time around. Waking the Witch follows the same style that she has shown throughout the Other World Series. It draws you into the story. By the end, she leaves you with wanting more. I really love her writing style. There’s always a little romance in her stories, but not too much and the main story line is really interesting. Everything weaves in and out very well. The book isn’t all that predictable as when Savannah finds something out, you do too, so you’re putting it together with them. Although I did see one of the twists, but not why. The great thing about her characters are that they sound like real people you would meet in real life. I really liked Savannah and I might have really liked her because she’s around my age so it’s easier for me to relate to her then the pervious narrators. None the less, it’s nice to see under her tough girl exterior and understand her a little more. She’s been through a lot growing up through the series and by the end of the novel you see that she hasn’t been completely unaffected or unaware as she acted. I also liked the US cover for the book, the Canadian one isn’t bad either. One of the things I liked about the cover are the letters for 'Waking the Witch.' It’s pretty and eye catching when the lights hits it. Also, I think the cover does a good representation of Savannah. It’s how I would picture her. If you haven’t read the Otherworld series, then you should. Armstrong does a great job in explaining how supernaturals can live among us and for us not to know about it. You can start from the beginning or start with Waking the Witch, but once you finish this novel you’ll want to go back and read the others. Also check out her young adult series, The Darkest Powers.

I was torn as to how many “stars” to give this one. It is a five-star on literary merit, but only a two-star on the “did I like it?” scale. Since this is my review, I went with the two-stars. Foremost, this is a thought provoking and interesting book. What I found unsettling about this book is that, in my opinion, the author is proselytizing his own sociopolitical agenda. As E.L. Doctorow has strong leftist political opinions, my reading of this book is obviously going to be affected by my own opposing views. I am a Protestant Christian with middle of the road political views leaning more to the conservative side. Nonetheless, I enjoy good discourse and do not shy away from books that question traditional Judeo-Christian faith. I believe that faith is very personal and needs to be explored to be truly believed. In that sense, I enjoyed this book but ultimately found the work to be tragic in that the only “answer” is that there are no answers. Personally, based on my faith, I disagree. I also do not appreciate being “told” what to think religiously or politically and I think this book has an undercurrent of proselytizing - even if it is simply telling you to question everything, which is, in and of itself, a religious viewpoint. All that said, the book certainly has literary merit and is uniquely well-written. I am glad to have experienced it but am not likely to read it again, and am torn over whether I’d recommend it to others. For me, this work falls into the category of “I can appreciate it for its merit but personally didn’t like it."

★★★★☆ I loved it! My Thoughts: This is my first Keri Arthur book, so being Australian (like Keri, which I didn't know beforehand) you can imagine my surprise when she started naming streets I was familiar with in Melbourne. Whenever there's a fantasy novel based in my home country I find it really hard to dislike it because it's so much easier to connect with a character that speaks the same way you do. Regardless, I found the story to be multi-layered and smooth-flowing so I know I would've liked it anyway. When I first picked it up I was only planning to skim the first page to get a feel for the story. It starts with Risa being followed by something she shouldn't know is there and before I knew it, I had to know what the deal was. Her and her friends are all unique in an already unique world and each have something that connects them to each other. Risa is a strong female lead being very loyal and very brave to face the things she needs to. There's a particularly hot scene in this and what goes down is a definite first for me which I wasn't ready for. Let's just say that Keri knows how to make the pages steam. Final Opinion: Darkness Unbound was a perfect mix of fantasy, mystery, suspense and hot boys. I know for sure I'll be back as I ordered the next one as soon as I finished and I have it waiting for my next to my bed right now. I'm looking forward to reading her Riley Jenson books too. First Lines: I've always seen the reapers. Even as a toddler—with little understanding of spirits, death, or the horrors that lie in the shadows—I'd been aware of them. As I'd gotten older and my knowledge of the mystical had strengthened, I'd begun to call them death, because the people I'd seen them following had always died within a day or so. Favourite Quote: "Darling girl, all you have to do is suggestively bat those gorgeous eyes his way, and the man won't care if you have monstrous bags underneath them."
