Fun little book, that reminds me more than a little of Stephanie Plum. There's even a "Ranger" in it...and a poor, constantly wrecked vehicle. Typical cozy mystery...a less-than-bright everywoman, who must see justice done, and gets saved just in the nick of time from her own stupidity. I'm not sure I can take many more of Abby's adventures, but I might try one more...

Incredibly funny but pretty damn tragic. Karr tells a great story.

I was in 7th grade when I read this book for the first time, and I've read it many more times since then. It has had a huge impact on what I think about nonfiction, journalism, and good writing in general. Not all of the essays in this collection are great, but some of them are completely perfect.

This is a book that I think a lot of people pretend to love because everyone else says they love it...Writing is not particularly strong other than a few poignant moments. This is the shit that inspires wealthy suburban kids to pretend to be new age hippy wannabes with their faux-spirituality and cliched political views...you think you're being original but you're all just variations on the same theme.

pretty bitter and vitriolic diatribe. And the "old ladies" in Florida are not mean. maybe depends how you treat them...

Coming of age story grappling with memory and how different characters view the same situation, as well as how it shapes their lives. Lee Goddell tries to find meaning in life, much as he tries to discover form within marble as a sculptor. When he is a boy in small town New Jesper, Illinois, a heinous crime happens to one of his classmates and he witnesses how his father, the Judge, and other leaders deal with the issue, more concerned with how the crime will affect the town’s reputation than on how the victim is faring. Years later he again encounters his classmate and learns how the incident affected her. Also central to the story is Ogden Hall, where Lee went to school. It was founded by an unlikeable, rich, big-game hunter. It is never entirely apparent why he would endow a school when he seems to have little interest in education or people generally, much less children. Probably he is getting revenge on his wife, who wants to go to Europe and have Rodin sculpt her likeness. Years later a bust of Rodin’s creation serves as the centerpiece of Ogden Hall’s library and is a constant inspiration to Lee. The common mythology among the students is that the bust is of Ogden’s late wife. This turns out to be false, the sculpture instead being that of an unknown Chicago debutante. The school is full of misfits and always struggles to retain qualified and respectable faculty. When it burns down in the end, the previous headmaster’s declaration that Ogden Hall is cursed seems to be true after all. Rodin’s Debutante illustrates how everyone views the past differently, and the way we view of our memories informs our future.

This was one of my favorite books the year I was 12. (My very favorite - from age 12 on - was probably To Kill A Mockingbird.) The book was a Christmas present that year. I reread it multiple times, and have reread it periodically over the years. It was unique for its time, of telling a story about Native Americans where they weren’t portrayed as perfect or as evil, but simply as human beings. I still have my original very worn copy. Just checked and it is in print and that's great because it’s a terrific story. It’s about a nine year old girl and her five year old sister and how, after their family is killed by members of a tribe of Comanche Indians, they’re kidnapped and adopted as members by different families in the tribe. The story is told from the older girl’s viewpoint. It’s a real epic as her story, and that of the tribe, is followed well into her early adulthood. Both the characters and plot are very well developed in this book. It’s the book that sparked my interest in Native American history.

It was so relieving to find a good vampire series just for grown ups. Don't get me wrong, I loved the sparkling vampires, but this series is perfect for some fun, light reading.

What 12-year-old boy wouldn't love a book with so much sex and drugs? I'm not 12 anymore and I kind of wonder if there was really that much sex in this book.
