In the psychotherapy training clinic I run, couples distress cases are among the toughest for our student therapists, vast majority of whom have never been married, so I'm always on the lookout for good books on the subject. This one was a bit different than I expected from the cover. It's not really geared toward even-handed consideration of whether to stay or go, but more like working through the process of leaving a spouse. Author runs "divorce groups", and the vast majority of the vignettes are about someone overcoming procrastination, denial, etc. to work up the courage to initiate divorce. I guess a useful supplementary perspective since most therapists probably start with the opposite inclination, but it was a little jarring "for me" as they always say on American Idol. My other quibble would be that there is virtually no attention to research or even the desirability of basing claims on research. One example: she claims (p. 131) that she can tell whether someone is going to stay married by their response to her initial question about why they want to stay married -- if they have approach motivation (e.g., I want to raise my children in one house with two parents), they are more likely to stay married than if they have avoidance motivation (e.g., I'm staying because I'm afraid of not seeing my children every day). sounds plausible to me, but I wouldn't be convinced of it unless there had been systematic study of whether this is indeed a predictor. Multiple by 1500 similar statements, and you get a sense of this aspect of the book. To be sure, documenting every single claim with studies can get tedious in a self-help book, and her observations surely count for something, but at least an acknowledgement of the extent to which these generalizations are speculative would have been welcome.

I've already had the pleasure of hearing Sarah Vowell on "This American Life" many times, so I was able to hear her (sweet, froggy, nasal) voice narrating this book in my head, which helped. Even with this working in her favor, I found myself distracted by some of her asides (like Peter Gallagher). I bet this makes the best audio book in the world.

tl;dr: Some interesting characters and conflicts get eaten by the self-righteous machine of Rand's arrogance and spite. What could have been an okay book became a slog through outrageous awfulness. Full review, some spoilers: (view spoiler) Quotes and commentary: (view spoiler) That's that, I suppose. There are other quotes, but I don't care--they're all of a piece, painting a picture in which everyone else only matters to you when they are feeding your own narcissism. Thanks, but I've lived in that world--it is unutterably awful. And relationships like this one are what breed shit like Twilight; no, no thanks. I will just quietly be sad that so many see light in this book when all it is is justification of their own fear of relating to others with any degree of vulnerability.

A simple yet complex children's book. On one hand it's sad, one gives up everything of material and of their being to provide happiness and joy to another who will never be satisfied. Yet by doing so, this makes that one so happy to oblige. Reminds me of a parent-child relationship, which is not really sad as parents get so much joy from their kids.

Sherman seems to get a pretty bad press for his destructive rampage through Georgia and the Carolinas. This book does manage to humanise him and his cohorts somewhat, though doesn't give much historical background to the Civil War. It is more a series of perceptive vignettes of soldiers, freed slaves and displaced civilians caught up in the chaos and misery of the unrelenting campaign. Vivid and immediate, but an easy, pleasurable and rewarding read despite the subject matter.

Seventeen year old Hadley Sullivan is not looking forward to her weekend trip to London for her father’s second wedding to a woman she’s never met. To make matters worse, Hadley is four minutes late for her flight and has to stick around the airport for three hours until the next flight, meaning that when she arrives in London, she will literally have to rush from the airport straight to the wedding. But then something happens that changes everything. While she’s waiting for her new flight, she meets Oliver, a British college student headed home to London. Taking place over 24 hours, Hadley learns to believe that true love can be found where you least expect it. I adored every page of this book. There is so much to love about THE STATISTICAL PROBABILITY OF LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT that I’m not even sure where to begin. Clearly, this is going to be a gushing review. Let’s start with the cover and title. The cover immediately draws me in with its black and white images with just a splash of red. The couple kissing? Love. The title of course captures me too; it’s quite a mouthful to say but it describes this book so accurately. I especially love in the ending of the book when the title and plot meet, and everything all of a sudden makes perfect sense. Okay, away from the superficial things and onto the content of the book. Immediately, I like Hadley, our main character. She is one hundred percent relatable and likable. I love that she isn’t perfect, makes mistakes and is completely okay with it. In just a span of 24 hours, we see Hadley change and grow immensely. I really enjoyed watching her attitude shift from completely angry and frustrated at the end of the book to completely blissful at the end. Hadley embarked on an emotional rollercoaster and it was a delight to be able to take the journey with her. I am absolutely fascinated by the fact that this book takes place in just 24 hours. I have to admit, I was a little nervous before I started reading. I was wondering how an author could manage to keep a readers attention in a book that happens in such a short amount of time, especially when most of the action takes place in an airport and on an airplane. However, I should have known not to worry. Jennifer E. Smith manages to create a story that seriously captured my heart and kept me reading until the very end. Not only was there plenty of action happening within the actual 24 hours the story takes place, but a decent amount of backstory adds to the story, as well. Okay, and then we have Oliver. I am a complete sucker for a boy with an accent, so I fell in love with Oliver, right along with Hadley. Just like Hadley wasn’t perfect, I love how Oliver wasn’t either. Jennifer E. Smith points out his many imperfections, but makes him lovable all the same. One lingering question I have is why Oliver disappeared after going through customs in the airport. In the midst of the romance between Hadley and Oliver, I enjoyed the secondary storyline of Hadley’s relationship with her dad and her feelings about her father’s wedding. This is where some of that backstory came in. I really liked learning about how and why he ended up moving from the United States to England. Seeing Hadley experience a change of heart on the day of the wedding showed just how much she really grew throughout the story. It’s hard to talk about THE STATISTICAL PROBABILITY OF LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT without gushing about the love story that unfolded over the course of the book. I’m clearly a romantic and stories like this one make me believe that love at first sight is absolutely possible. I adored the fact that Hadley and Oliver met in an airport, which is beautifully described in the book as a place where people are neither here nor there; in a sort of limbo. Then, I was obviously completely enamored with how important it was for Hadley to find Oliver in London that she literally wandered the city looking for him based on only a few facts. Sigh, if only something like this could happen to me…Jennifer E. Smith has written a truly fantastic book that will appeal to teenagers, adults and everyone in between.

Despite the fact that I'm not a huge fan of her Food Network shows because I try to stick to a healthier diet, I really enjoyed Paula Deen's memoir. She was very honest and forthright in discussing a variety of personal hurdles. The book felt very conversational, which I really appreciated. I thought the chapters where she offered her readers advice was very good too. She wasn't preachy, but informational. I do take issue with her philosophy that hard work will get you to where she is. I'm sure there are plenty of people throughout the world who work incredibly hard every day, even harder than she did, and still haven't been touched with her tremendous good fortune. Otherwise, I really liked the book and would recommend it.

Bu, Amerikan Noir'in harika bir koleksiyonudur; türü en iyi şekilde temsil eder. Cain'in romanı Postacı ... işinin favorisi. Bu konuda karanlık ve varoluşsal bir şey var; bu tür anlatılara "Kara" adını verenlerin Fransız krtitikleri olacağı mantıklıdır. Sanki Camus, New Deal America'nın bir ürünü müydü? Diğer parlak an, benim için K. Fearing'in romanı Büyük Saat. Çoğu hamurun aksine, bu roman tamamen komiktir; ruh hali ve mizahı bir şekilde ferahlatıcı görünüyor. Bu kesinlikle kütüphane için bir tane ...
