I read this originally in 1995 (or so), then tried to reread it for book club Mar '07. Maybe I was just too old (in my 30s), or maybe b/c I had read Bram Stoker's Dracula (and loved it!), it just didn't click. But I found the main character annoying and full of himself (all the time saying he wasn't full of himself), and some of the relationships just plain old creepy.

HUGE disappointment. I loved Edwards' Bright and Shining Tiger, so I immediately purchased her other three books expecting something similarly good. Edwards' style was definitely recognizable in this book what with the horses and the older-than-usual heroine, but the characters were not at all likable or interesting, the world she created wasn't compelling, and the plot really didn't make sense most of the time. Also, as with her other books, she set this one up as though she was planning to write a sequel which never came.

I read this book thinking it was the book Hemingway describes in the brilliant, possibly drunken, radio appearance, "In Harry's Bar in Venice" [http://www.salon.com/audio/fiction/20...]. For all they have in common (take place in Venice, document the relation between an officer and young venetian girl), they seem to have nothing to do with one another. Also, the dialogue was irritating and the characters horribly developed. The Colonel keeps reminiscing about various generals, good and bad, he's known over the years and how he lost the men under his command to bad orders. Spoiler alert: he dies. The end.

The essential book about nuclear deterrence and arms as politics. Which is to say, I obvs fell asleep while reading it. But it was still good.

In the beginning I was completely enthused. The book transported me into another world during the first one or even two weeks of reading. (I read only a few chapters per day.) Then the torture started. After every possible miracle has been performed by the Indian saints, Yogananda repeats himself over and over and over and over again. God is great, the saints are great, kriya yoga is great, India is great, God is great, the saints are great, and so on. Thereby writing in a style that, for me, is hard to read without sighing from time to time. Sentences like the following do not appeal a lot to me: "Many rapturous moments have been spent in gazing, almost absentmindedly, at the ever changing canvas of God stretched across the firmament, for his touch alone is able to produce colors that vibrate with the freshness of life." To me that sounds like the diary entry of a teenage girl who just came home from the latest awesome bible lesson. And references to the bible there are indeed enough, as well as pseudo-scientific explanations of spiritual phenomena (and vice versa). What I really liked about the book were the teachings given not by Yogananda but the saints. There is some deep truth in parts of the text, hence the three stars. I really couldn't give it more, for the second half of the book i had to force myself to read. The great grandson of Lahiri Mahasaya has some interesting videos on YouTube. He clearly points out that some of Yogananda's claims are nothing more than, well, marketing.

Reading this was a little like eating my (organic) broccoli - I am glad I did as a card carrying resident of the bay area :) but it was quite long and because it's 6 years old I not only didn't get the Paris Hilton reference anymore but have read variations of his themes in his other books, articles, as well as from other writers.

A pretty neat concept and so far a very easy-to-digest read that covers a lot of very interesting example cases around the idea of "thin slicing" or subconsciously making decisions and acting upon them automatically before you're even consciously aware that you're doing so. Interesting subject matter - well, to me at least. Wow, a run on sentence follwed by an incomplete fragment. I need to read more.

Jackson was definitely ahead of her time, and all of these stories have that undercurrent of unease that she does so well. It was cool to re-read The Lottery as an adult, too.
