It is nigh on impossible for me to talk about Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith without being swept away on a wave of emotion, for it was this book that singlehandedly altered the way in which I viewed the world and those around me. Despite undergoing a gradual change in my beliefs on Heaven, Hell, and everything in between, Rob Bell still remains one of my favourite authors, someone who has grasped what, in my opinion, it means to be a true Christian in a world that is, unfortunately, dominated by a strange and dangerous bastardisation of what was once a peaceful, loving, and beautiful religion. I first read Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith in the spring of 2009, when, as all teenagers do, I was searching for truth and meaning in a life that seemed void of both. I had momentarily flirted with Christianity before, but, coming from a household of atheists, it had never featured heavily in my life whilst growing up. That all changed when I discovered Bell. His ideas painted Christianity in a way that had never been presented to me before. Gone was the stuffy, conservative, and hate-filled religion that seemed to feature prominently around me, and in came a radical, inclusive, and open-minded philosophy based on love and camaraderie. Despite drifting away from Christianity (which is a story for another day), I have read several of Bell's books since first picking up Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith, but this one remains my favourite. Maybe it is because of the impact that it made on my life during my formative years, or maybe it is because, finally, I felt as if somebody was discussing the beautiful Eastern religion that I knew had been torn apart by the West. Either way, there is no doubt that Bell is one of modern Christianity's finest thinkers, and this is one of the best examples of the fine work that he continues to produce.

This was the best one yet, I think. Unfortunately, Eric wasn't himself, but things do become more complicated between him and Sookie and I'm glad I have the next book on hand to see how that works out. But this story seemed the tightest so far, despite that there were a couple separate plot threads running simultaneously.

I loved this glimpse at who Eve was. We had always heard of this tough girl from the projects. I can see how Jane was like Eve now. It was what I expected out of Iris Johansen: a strong main character, lots of action, and a major twist. My only regret was that I don't have the next in the series lined up and will have to wait for it to get here.
