A perfect blend of storytelling, poetic biology, and some good frisky parts. An easy one to pick up and reread.

Love love love the Detective Agency series! All the characters are absolutely delightful; and I'd love to actually visit Botswana!

** spoiler alert ** This manga was much more enjoyable than I expected after just reading the summary. It was hilarious! The story was a little slow getting going, but I loved the whole idea of how, after all her romantic dreams are shattered, Kyoko doesn't feel sorry for herself - she just immediately snaps to REVENGE! The illustrations of Kyoko's "emotions" and the hand coming out of her throat were also quite funny. I only wish that there was more to read in one volume!!

Book #9 of 2009 These last two books have been such quick and easy reads that it feels a bit like cheating. Anyway, I craved romance and missed the library book sale, so I went looking for one to borrow. This was OK, a pretty fun read, even if there were glaring errors, gaping holes, plot lines started that never went anywhere, a lack of sex (I mean, come on! I thought that's what romances were for) and extremely repetitve descritptions of the two Main Characters physical traits. I mean, I get it already! He's incredibly sexy and has chopped off more than one person's head. But, I wasn't expecting War and Peace, so this was a fun read. One plus is that the female lead didn't lose all of her self-sufficiency once she met "the love of her life" as is often the case in romances. Borrowed from the library.

Honestly I don’t even know where to begin or how to review this book. This was a tough book to read on many levels. It was a long book and not something one can just blow through. Is it possible to love a book yet hate the content at the same time? What I mean by this is, the book was beautifully and creatively written. It was narrated by “Death” which was haunting in itself. I hated the content of the lack of humanity shown during the holocaust. Each time I read a book about this time period it just makes me sick to my stomach the way Jewish people were treated. This book is a heart-breaker to read. People that are not affected by the holocaust must have stones for hearts. What was interesting to me, and I feel this each time I read a historical fiction book, was how very little people back in this era had. Each day was a fight for survival to just have enough to eat to make it to the next day. Here we live today in a world where we have more “things” (and food) in this life than ever, yet sadly, we are never satisfied. This book is dark and haunting…yet it will most likely be one you will never forget reading.

Romance Fluff, but I enjoyed it :)

Okay, it's a bit of a feat at 1300+ pages (when you include the removed portion tacked on in an appendix, which is vivid and fascinating and worth reading), but every moment of it is thick with imagery and beautiful language. I feel like a faker for having read it in English and being unable to read it in French, but it feels completely natural in English, and while I used to also appreciate one of the many film adaptations and the musical, they pale over time while this retains its vivid life. So, it is epic, a true adventure spanning decades, an intriguing look at some tumultuous Frrench history, and just such a lush depiction of a simple but powerful character. or whole cast of characters, really, for no one included in the story seem ill-placed and they are all well-painted and terribly human in their flaws and aspirations. Javert is still one of my favorites, and I think one of the best not-villains ever, and his struggle with Valjean is a better portrait of 'evil' in the world than many dare to think.

I enjoyed this one for it's outrageous take-off on the gothic form, and its moments of dark humour! My review http://literarymosaic.blogspot.com/20...

I absolutely love this book. It's clever yet simple. The Phantom Tollbooth is the book that got me interested in reading. It was the book that made me realize not every book is a western. Because believe me, I loathe westerns.
