Strategy Architecture strategyarch — This book is brilliant, in my opinion. There are many others who completely disagree with me. I have rarely seen so many different points of view on Amazon or on Goodreads--it seems like a book you either love or hate. I was transfixed, although I did think it was a very grim book. What I loved about this book was that I haven't read anything else quite like it. So often I read a suspense book, and I know what's going to happen. I couldn't predict this at all. It's a dark, bleak, savage story. It's set in winter in northern Sweden where there are only a few hours of daylight, and the cold is even worse than Minnesota. The plot is complex. It seems to meander, but all the different threads come together in the end. There are many mentally ill people in the book, including sociopathic children. It felt surreal, nightmarish. When suspects and witnesses are interviewed, they don't offer up information easily, they tell half-truths. I thought the dialogue was intriguing. It's written in the present tense, which added to the intensity of the suspense (although that annoyed some reviewers). I thought the descriptions were excellent. The authors (a husband/wife team) used excellent sensory detail--you felt you were in all the scenes. I was fascinated by Erik, the drug-dependent hypnotist whose career and marriage are in the toilet. He seems repugnant. How can he possibly redeem himself? If you love gripping, visceral, unusual suspense, I highly recommend this book. If you don't like it, don't say I didn't warn you.

Eric Jones ebjones — Honestly I don’t even know where to begin or how to review this book. This was a tough book to read on many levels. It was a long book and not something one can just blow through. Is it possible to love a book yet hate the content at the same time? What I mean by this is, the book was beautifully and creatively written. It was narrated by “Death” which was haunting in itself. I hated the content of the lack of humanity shown during the holocaust. Each time I read a book about this time period it just makes me sick to my stomach the way Jewish people were treated. This book is a heart-breaker to read. People that are not affected by the holocaust must have stones for hearts. What was interesting to me, and I feel this each time I read a historical fiction book, was how very little people back in this era had. Each day was a fight for survival to just have enough to eat to make it to the next day. Here we live today in a world where we have more “things” (and food) in this life than ever, yet sadly, we are never satisfied. This book is dark and haunting…yet it will most likely be one you will never forget reading.

Chen Chen chinches — It gave me heavy boots to finish this book. I loved it. It made me feel like one hundred dollars. You should read it.
