I raced through it's 500+ pages without understanding what the hell was going on. I guess that's what Surrealism is supposed to do. Regardless of my comprehension of Murakami's work, I'm more than ready to read another of his books. I just wish I knew what the deal was with all those Freudian overtones, and the talking cats.

I liked this book a lot. I just recommend that whoever reads it reads the appendix at the end to understand how it was written, it makes it more interesting!

Even though it is already April, it is still snowing. Can Grandma Baba make winter go away?

Hadassah was a little too perfect to be relatable, but I found myself liking her as a character. The first 70 pages or so were jumping from character to character too quickly, IMO. As soon as I would get into the story behind one character it would jump to another and it took me awhile to get into it. If I had stuck with my 50 page rule (read 50 pages of a book before deciding if I'm into it enough to finish), I would never have finished. But it was highly recommended by a friend and I've read Rivers before, so I kept on trudging. I'm glad I did.

Everlost By Neal Shusterman When Allie and Nick get in a car crash, they don't quite get to 'where they're going.' In Everlost, the inbetween world, Allie and Nick wake up to find they didn't make it to the light at the end of the tunnel, but they are dead in the living world. They can only hold what has crossed over, they can only walk on land that is in Everlost, they can't even compunicate with the 'fleshies' or the living and breathing. Will they be stuck in Everlost forever? Are there other 'Afterlights' or children who have recently crossed into Everlost. Go along with Allie and Nick on their adventure exploring the curious, yet dangerous world of Everlost, making allies along with enimies, and learning just what it means to be dead. I loved this book not only for its sense of mystery, adventure, and humor, but for the idea itself. I believe that the idea is very unique and new. It doesn't tell what side is right, or what to think, but alows your imagination to wander. You think that an event will end up one way, but then takes turn down a different road. Neal Shusterman combines humor with a awesome idea and you get Everlost! I hope you like it as much as I did.

I really enjoyed this fantasy based on a computer adventure game. Rushdie's word play was a lot of fun.

I recited one of the poems in this for a talent show in elementary school. A beloved book, only happy memories!

As in her other books, in "Birds of America" Moore has moments where she makes you feel squeezed all over, in mind and heart and gut. (The part in "Charades" where she writes about the main character's affair being an insignificant act like "taking off your gloves, clapping your hands together a few times, and putting the gloves back on" (I paraphrase badly) struck me as one.) I didn't find this book as funny as "Self-Help," thus the 4 stars, but I continue to believe that, at least in terms of short stories, Moore is one of the most important and talented living American writers. My favorites were "Terrific Mother," which I'd read before in an anthology somewhere, and "People Like That are the Only People here," which is absolutely sick in its verisimilitude. Also, "Beautiful Grade" which did a damn good job at a male POV.
