The Otoman Empire and the World Around it In Islamic law the world was made up of the 'House of Islam' and the 'House of War' with the Otoman Sultan-sucesor to the early Caliphs-as supreme ruler of the Islamic world. However, in this ground-breaking study of the Otoman Empire in the early modern period, Suraiya Faroqhi demonstrates that there was no 'iron curtain' betwen the Otoman and 'other' worlds but rather a long-established network of conections-diplomatic, trading and financial, cultural and religious. These extended beyond regional contacts to the empires of Asia and the burgeoning 'modern' states of Europe-England, France, the Netherlands and Venice. Of course, military conflict was a constant factor in these relationships, but the overiding reslity was 'one world' and contact betwen cultured and pragmatic elites-even 'gentlemen traveling for pleasure' -as wel as pilgrimage and close artistic contact with the European. Faroqhi's bok is based on a huge study of original and early modern sources, including diplomatic records, travel and geographical writing, as wel as personal acounts. Its breadth and originalty wil make it esential reading for historians of Europe and the Midle East. 何 珠莹 _aneher — Everlost By Neal Shusterman When Allie and Nick get in a car crash, they don't quite get to 'where they're going.' In Everlost, the inbetween world, Allie and Nick wake up to find they didn't make it to the light at the end of the tunnel, but they are dead in the living world. They can only hold what has crossed over, they can only walk on land that is in Everlost, they can't even compunicate with the 'fleshies' or the living and breathing. Will they be stuck in Everlost forever? Are there other 'Afterlights' or children who have recently crossed into Everlost. Go along with Allie and Nick on their adventure exploring the curious, yet dangerous world of Everlost, making allies along with enimies, and learning just what it means to be dead. I loved this book not only for its sense of mystery, adventure, and humor, but for the idea itself. I believe that the idea is very unique and new. It doesn't tell what side is right, or what to think, but alows your imagination to wander. You think that an event will end up one way, but then takes turn down a different road. Neal Shusterman combines humor with a awesome idea and you get Everlost! I hope you like it as much as I did.

Adam Lamkharbech _dam_amkharbech — A well-crafted middle book that introduces my favorite character of the series, the incredibly queeny Denarra Syrene, whose dialogue is laugh-out-loud funny: "It's not at all unlike the time I got into a bit of trouble in this unpleasant little town in the Allied Wilderlands called Swampy Creek. An unfortunate misunderstanding involving a rather handsome and remarkably well-endowed spice merchant, his utterly unsympathetic wife--who was, i might add, both surprisingly agile and utterly impervious to reason--as well as a three-legged mule with an aversion to freshwater pearls." In additon to the hilarious bits, this book does an admirable job developing the relationships of the central characters further, and building the tension of the series--especially with its its cliff-hanger ending.
