I read this book in high school and I have never so vigilantly begged other people not to read a book- but the damn title seems to be too alluring to pass up. Obviously it's been years since I have read it, so I don't feel fully qualified to comment on the quality of the writing, but the story and situations are consistently sad, eerily violent, and filled with dissatisfaction and unhappiness. By the time you reach the end it feels like many bad things happened yet nothing much really happened at all. It did give me an insight into life in English suburbia, but otherwise made me grateful to live in my sheltered boring American town (which, upon talking to any of my friends, you'll learn is quite a feat)

I loved this book because it challenges some conventional thinking, using conventional methods. I don't agree with all of Levitt's conclusions, but I do find him very interesting and like that he takes a very unique perspective on things. Warning: some of his ideas may seem offensive, but I would encourage people to read-on and take it for what it's worth.

I finished this book wondering what the point was, which I guess was the point, the basic pointlessness of most of the Kansas-Missouri violence even in a Civil War context...nonetheless it's not exactly an ideal feeling to leave a book having. Lydia was an extraordinarily uncomfortable heroine, and despite her exploits seemed to have no real personality - she was just a canvas for events to be imprinted on. Everyone around her had actual convictions about things which made her lack of them pretty unrealistic.

This book is incredibly stupid and I remember laughing out loud, which is rare for me for any book. If you are a fan of The Kids in the Hall, this book is worth checking out.

This book is a continuation from Pretty on The Outside. It is about this girl named Alice is still having a crush on her ex-boyfriend, Tristan. Then suddenly she met a boy who she got a crush on. Her best friend, Tally had a crush on her English teacher. Both girls went into disastrous moments and I could say is Alice have a crazy mind because she already have a crush and she's getting another one. She didn't even know the boy and just like him because of his cuteness. I think Alice should pick Tristan because she knows him much better. Tally just do things that she thinks it is correct but it really not because dating a English teacher is not right especially she is his student. Will the girls get a heartbreak in the end? Read the book to find out!

I read this for the first time as an adult starting yesterday, which so happened to be Steinbeck's birthday. I was just compelled to read it and glad I did. This story has become such a part of the American psyche that it was like a deja vu experience. Steinbeck is a master craftsman of the American version of the English language; every word in this book seems thought out and necessary. The dialog is crackling and tells much of the story before Steinbeck' effective, almost detached narration settles in. A beautiful book about a sad subject without moral grandstanding. I sit now in awe, contemplating what I just read. That rarely happens anymore.

A brave little book with absolutely no point to it at all.
