Cute story. We recently visited Disney World and I found it fun to relate the storyline back to our visit.

A female professor of English literature at the University of Tehran leaves university life to teach a weekly literary course to her best and brightest female students at her home when the fundamentalist climate of the country tightens the rules governing the lives of women. Fascinating & intimate look at the recent history of Iran during the 80s-90s through the lens of essay-like chapters that blend both a tender and frightening narrative with hard-core literary criticism.

Another riff on the Twelve Dancing Princesses (this seems to be the latest thing!) with a dash of Persephone and Beauty and the Beast thrown in for good measure. Reveka, an apprentice herbalist, longs to break the curse of the twelve princesses who disappear each night and return every morning worn out and with holes in their shoes. Her plan is to use the reward money to buy her way into a convent and set herself up as an herbalist in her own right. The set-up is a little slow but, once Reveka follows the princesses into the Underworld and encounters Lord Dragos, a humanoid dragon called a zmeu, readers are in for quite a ride. And unlike many books these days that are written with a sequel in mind, this one doesn't have a cliffhanger ending. The main plot points are wrapped up neatly, Reveka and Lord Dragos will definitely be back!

Totally awesome book. Makes you think of whether you'd rather be ignorant and happy, or aware and alarmed. Was the Garden of Eden necessarily a good thing, and who exactly gets to decide?

omg, this was good. it was a bit different from the way the movie went, but what book/movie duo isn't? it was really well written and i couldn't seem to put it down once i finally got into it, tho the last chapter or so was a bit slow it seemed for me. regardless, i really enjoyed it and my favorite line in the entire book would have to be: "All of them snicker. One of them asks what 'barter' means." (p 158)
