Not the best book I have read but good in its own simple way, a suspenceful (sp?) origin of family. One of the main characters is Matilda, Mattie, gotta love that name.

I read this book because Stephanie Meyer is the author and I totally loved The Twilight Saga. I find this is a novel for a more mature reader. I prefer young adult paranormal/urban fantasy/dyostopian novels. It took ALOT for me to get into this book. My friends that read the book kept telling me to stick with it and I did. I'm glad I did, the ending was great. However, I didn't get into the story line until like the 25th chapter. Good thing the chapters were short! It's basically set in the future and aliens take over the world and use human bodies to place their souls in. You have a girl, Melanie who fought the host, Wanda taking over her body and eventually they bonded and worked together. Melanie led them to the hideout where there were other humans. Melanie/Wanda finds Melanie's brother and boyfriend there. The humans discover what Melanie is. Melanie/Wanda work together and fight to save humanity and both find love.

I loved Anne of Green Gables, and when I got around to reading this I was already halfway to my teens. I remember thinking this story goes around in circles to much. The stuff with Diane getting married always disconcerted me. And Gil, sweet Gil...we always want to read more of Gil.

A truly beautiful tragedy, in the sense of a Greek tragedy: a situation that is inescapable in which no one is behaving badly or meanly. I loved reading this book because it's beautifully written, even though it's very sad. The pieces fit together wonderfully, and it is very clear that the horrible conclusion is inevitable.

With From the Ashes Ostrander updates his idea of villains turned government operatives (think: the Dirty Dozen) in a tale that bashes big corporate warmongers with thinly veiled political overtones (that simultaneously don't come off as heavy handed). Fans of the original series from the 1980's won't find anything new here, but they won't be disapointed either. Ostrander stays on top of his game creating a veritible lair of asps and throwing the characters into it face first. What follows is a meat grinder of backstabbing, betryals, and personal preserverance that makes for a damn fine tale, worth reading again and again. This is definitely a series I'd like to see continued, especially in the current global perspective. I really only have two words to say to Mr. Ostrander: More Please.
