I read Moneyball, and have heard Lewis on countless interviews regarding this book. Moneyball gave me a completely new appreciation for baseball-- the Big Short makes accessible the whole reason why we're all in the world of hurt we're in now. I think I'm just jealous that I don't write like this-- taking the uber-complex and giving it a compelling story.

This may be the worst book I have ever read that didn't have the words "Danielle Steele" somewhere on the cover . ..until you hit the description of Nero's burning of Rome. For about 30 pages it is terrific, and then reverts back to some of the worst prose and suppressed erotic perversity I have ever laid eyes upon. Those nutty early Christians spend a LOT of time looking at golden-haired maidens in diaphanous gowns, and there is a moment where Petronius has his slave Eunice whipped instead of dosing her with saltpeter that is just . . .wow.

The first 200 pages were really tough for me. It was boring and dry, to be quite honest. After Dr. Urbino died, the book got much more interesting. I really enjoyed the last 50 or so pages, when Fermina and her new lover traveled their Caribbean river.

I really liked this book! The plot was unique and intriguing. I had a hard deciding which character I wanted to side with and I love it when an author can do that to me. It slowed down for me a tad in the middle, when I was anxious to figure out the ending. I had my suspicions about the ending and was hopeful for a couple things to happen. There were some twists that I loved and Sarah nailed the ending. By the last 100 pages I couldn't put it down. Can't wait for a 3rd Sarah Pekkanen book.
