Chris Boakes chrisboakes — In reviews I read of this book (I'd been hearing about it for a few years) some thought that Callow was exploiting his relationship with Playwright Agent Peggy Ramsay, but that's not how I felt when reading it. It was a unique relationship, sometimes lopsided, sometimes even, with the same ups and downs that all friendships experience, but with two artistic people involved, the volatility factor was exponentially increased. Gina C gina361901ab — I began enjoying the book, but gave up on it halfway through. It was too gossipy, and produced a caricature of the man. Listening to excerpts of interviews with Thomas, he was certainly an eccentric. But he had an underlying awareness of just what he did, and presented as someone with a powerful sense of humour. This didn't come accross anything like strongly enough in the book, which just became irritating.

David Gonzalez _slr_avid — The first 200 pages were really tough for me. It was boring and dry, to be quite honest. After Dr. Urbino died, the book got much more interesting. I really enjoyed the last 50 or so pages, when Fermina and her new lover traveled their Caribbean river.
