Worth reading every three years or so. The advice stays the same, yet is newly relevant for each current economic situation, whatever that situation may be. Partly because the frequent revisions address changing conditions but mainly because the ideas are so fundamental. The author states right up front that this is by no means the only good investment guide available, but that reading other good guides probably won't improve your knowledge and might confuse you even more. And he makes the point that many investment books are flat out not useful. They either explain to you how to play a certain investment game without addressing whether or not you should even being playing the game at all, or cover so much information that you finish reading just as overwhelmed as you began. In the "Oh, by the way" category. Tobias is also the author of 'The Best Little Boy in the World', originally published under the pseudonym John Reid, and 'The Best Little World in the World Grows Up', several other books about finance, is the Treasurer of the Democratic National Committee and has a blog about investing, politics, technology, and whatever else catches his eye at www.andrewtobias.com

Book #25 o 2009 - Officially halfway to 50... I think I might have to extend my goal! This book was OK and a fun and light read, but I didn't like it as much as the other two books this author wrote under this name. I think it was because it took place in Medieval Scotland and not modern day Scotland and although its fun to imagine what that time would have been like, I seem to have an easier time with the Medieval men marrying the women in modern time they modern women going back and marrying the Medieval men. Not sure. Maybe because I would want to be stuck in 14th century Scotland? I'm sure its a nice place to visit (you know, if such a thing were possible), but give me indoor plumbing and modern medicine! Lots of roaming characters from the other books, which was also fun (not too important to the plot though). I own this book

This book offers some good insights into Obama's thinking. He deals honestly with issues and seems to have a deep desire for constructive bipartisanship. I found his chapter on faith to be especially interesting - it reinforces my belief that one is very hard pressed to live an uncompromised Christian life in the political arena.

Not one of the first-rate ones. Very problematic. Pre-makeover Philip is sufficiently sullen and immature that the makeover into a silver-tongued devil isn't very convincing. Cleone never has a single likeable moment; a sensible man would have forgotten her as soon as he met an interesting woman. (You can tell the author senses this, because the preface makes such a big deal of "for us Jettans, there is always only one great love.") The scene in which Cleone accidentally gets engaged to two men is funny, and Philip's cleaning up after is mildly amusing.

Tana French is one of those rare writers who can write a genre novel (in her case crime) and round out the stories so much that you forget you're reading a crime novel. Her books are less procedural and more character studies of flawed individuals trying to make sense of the unnatural acts human beings can commit on one another. I cannot wait for the next one.

I loved the beginning and the end. It kind of lagged in the middle for me. An intriguing story about a child that is raised by people in a graveyard after his family is brutally murdered. At times it seemed as though the author couldn't decide whether he was writing a novel or a collection of short stories. I think that is what made the middle part tough for me. Still, a fun story, but I liked Coraline better!

I started out loving this book. And then it got slow and a little dull. And then the ending really ruined it for me (we never find out what happened in the woods!!!!!!).

Yoko's Show and Tell by Rosemary Wells is about a show and tell gone wrong. It also introduces children to Girl's Day, Japanese culture and doll hospitals. A few weeks before Girl's Day, Yoko received a package from her grandparents. It is her great-grandmother's Girl's Day doll, Miki. It's been in the family for generations and now it's Yuko's. The young cat desperately wants to share it at show and tell but her mother says No. Yuko doesn't listen and the doll ends up broken on the bus floor because of two bullies. Yuko tells her mother the truth and together they take the doll to a doll hospital to have it repaired before the grandparents arrive on their Spring visit. My children have heard about Girl's Day and know about the importance of dolls on that day. My daughter is currently in kindergarten, although, show-and-tell hasn't been brought up yet. Those two pieces of the story, therefore, rang true for both children. The doll hospital struck them as completely made up. I think doll hospitals were more popular a few decades ago. I have never seen one, nor been to one. I did know a doll restorer through my father who is an antique dealer. She had the shop around the corner from him. But an actual doll hospital like the one shown in Yuko's Show-And-Tell is something I've only ever seen in books. So while I think book is geared towards introducing children to more pieces of Japanese culture, especially something relevant to children, the doll hospital aspect of the story ended up being the piece that needed the most explanation. I did a quick online search and found addresses for a pair of doll hospitals but neither has a web site. I'm not sure if they are as elaborate on the "hospital" facade as the one in this book. Have you ever visited a doll hospital?
