The fact that this author sold this book proves some of his premises, most notably that the 80/20 rule states that 80 percent of the work on any project gets done in the first 20 percent of the time, and the other 20 percent takes 80 percent of the time, so skipping the last 80 percent of the time and presenting the project “as is” will make a project “good enough” and give the creator of the project more time to loaf. So, while this book is good enough, it is far from great. Most sections could have been considerably shortened, but that would mean too few words to make a book—especially since only the right hand pages have textual content; the left hand pages have succinct quotes more or less based upon the adjacent right page content, “for the truly lazy.” This is the 8th book that the author has produced on this subject using this method, which might explain the rather light content. His tone is upbeat and he presents a few basic and valid concepts for working less and enjoying life more, mainly by committing to and concentrating on a few important things and by applying the 80/20 rule. I did like the book’s autobiographical parts and it required very little effort to read it. The trouble with this book as a self-help book is that it lacks in practical advice or exercises for accomplishing the mindset and time use skills that he espouses. Also, my pet peeve, he tells us to think “creatively” without defining what he means by creatively. An art school professor pointed out to me that when people use this term it is typically void of practical meaning. I think Zelinski might know what he means by it, but if even if he does, he doesn't share that with the reader. Still, you’ve gotta give the guy credit for proving his points by publishing and selling this very readable yet content-xtra lite volume. A fast read, but only do it if you can get it from the library—not a keeper!

I didn't love reading this book - it was disturbing - but it was thought-provoking and made for a good book group discussion. The main character is a young woman who was active in the Weather Underground, and then fled the country to "hide" in Liberia. She is there during their civil war and becomes separated from her sons. Later she works in chimpanzee refuge. Not a "feel good" book to read before bed!

I though I was a scrooge until I read this guy! Very funny, self serving book for those of us who refuse to waste money on useless Christmas presents. Eloquently sends up the old right with their 'back to basics' christmas as well as the new jesus freaks who want all the commercialism but just jesus in the shopping mall as well (see Bill O'Reilly). This guy's bone of contention is simply if you must buy things do it efficiently - get things people really want His appeal for efficiency is a welcome one but his analysis of value destruction is nonsense based on classical bourgois economics. Simply because I don't like the present I get doesn't destroy its value, it is however extremely wasteful of resources if I just dump it. his solution - gift cards and charity donations. His final paragraph: "A spectre is haunting the rich western economies - the spectre of wasteful gif giving"

an enjoyable read, but very over-rated and not as profound as it wants to be

Read August 1st - August 6th Death is peaceful, easy, but life is harder.” Daelyn Rice is a living example of this. All her life she has just wanted to die. After many suicide attempts she wants to finally be done with it. You may thinks she is some type of psycho, but she isn’t. Just like millions of kids out there she has been bullied and she is done with it. On top of that she is a mute, meaning she can’t talk. Also, she has to wear a neck brace. The bullying has gone beyond verbal. It has reached a sexual and physical level, but she can’t tell anyone because she’s afraid of what will happen. There is only one hope and it’s a website called throughthelight.com. It’s a website for people deciding to commit suicide where they can blog everything that has happened to them and find affective ways to cut their lives short. There, Daelyn tells all about her bullying stories and much more. The only problem is since her last two attempts to kill herself her mom and dad are tracking everything she does. Santana is his name. The boy Daelyn is afraid to let in. The boy who doesn’t know it, but he just might save Daelyn’s life. Before You Read This I’ll Be Dead is an amazing book that really enlightens you. Julie Ann Peters did and awesome job of writing this book and making me, the reader feel connected emotionally. I couldn’t help how much I wanted to keep reading this book. The theme really taught me a lot, such as it’s never too late to let someone in and to be grateful for the life you have. Daelyn couldn’t help what was wrong with her, but she continued to get bullied until she was at the end of her rope. I mean, why does it have to come to somebody killing themselves for other people to see what they did was wrong? Millions of children, teens, and adults commit suicide everyday because of bullying. I highly recommend this book to all ages of people who need to see that bullying does have an affect on a person and like to read realistic fiction. This story isn’t one that would never happen. This kind of stuff happens on a daily basis. You can be the change in this world and not be the bully. It’s never too late to save a life.

Unbelievably, I hadn't read this book even though it's been on my mental to-read list for ages. I think it used to always be checked out and I was also afraid I wouldn't like it for some reason. But I loved it! And the plus side of waiting forever to read a series like this is that you can check out 5 at a time instead of having to wait for the next one to be published.

Easy, fun read. Especially appreciated her chapter on motherhood / nursing and the guilt trip that moms get for formula-feeding.
